Tell me this isn't another Geforce FX flaw...

I recorded an episode of "Friends" from my HTPC. I then transferred it to my PC via the network.

Playing from the HTPC played fine and that is using a Nforce IGP, with a Mobile AXP 2400+. My computer has never had any problem playing movies, or playing these when they are recorded to DVD. However, i have the files on my desktop instead of on DVD this time. When i play the DVD everything will be fine for about 5 seconds until everything falls apart.

Frames are jumping, SOund is skipping, everything is out of sync, CPU utilization is through the roof. I dont know what is happening!? It is like watching (no offense) a Chinese movie translated into english.

Is this something with my *wonderful* Geforce FX card or is this a software problem. My computer should not be having this problem. It is much faster than the HTPC.

Do you have anything else running that is accessing the hard drive?

I guess nvidia forgot to "optimize" their FX drivers for video playback...

/sarcasm

But serioulsy, maybe try the old agp speed/fastwrites trick, it might help.

I have absolutely nothing else running except NAV (Norton Anti Virus) and that isn't even scanning, it is just enabled. AIM is closed, all firefox windows are close, Microsoft Anti Spyware is closed. The only other thing open is NVMixer.

Looking at the performance monitor (Task Manager) when the system is idle it is idle, there are no suspicious programs. I did a netstat and nothing is running that shouldn't be.

I will try disabling fast writes.

Do you think this could be a problem with the Xtreme G Drivers. Im using a 77.30 Type 2's. Or could it be from OCing. I have the card slightly OCed. Ill bring it back to stock settings and try as well.

Anyone else have any suggestions?

Looks like Newegg has 99+ XFX and eVGA models and only 10 WinFast models. To bad newegg doesn't let you type 999 in anymore to find out the total stock they have.

Well i disabled fast writes, and default clocked the card. It now works for about 5mins at a time, at which point i scroll the wheel up (1x reverse) for a second and then go back to regular, and it works for another 5 or so minutes.

Strange.

Try running your CPU at default speeds as well as your vid card and see how it plays.

Is the file 4GB?

No it is 1.07Gig. Also i recorded from TV, i have made no other changes whatsoever. Would that mean it isn't encoded even though it says MPG.

My CPU is at the default 1.8GHz however to get it there i lowered the multi and bumped the FSB up to 200 to run it in sync with my memory. SHould have 0 difference.

It could be completely uncompressed and still have .mpg the YUV2 codec is mpg.

1.07GB for a tv show sounds like its compltely uncompressed, have you checked CPU usage?

Yes i have. THe best i can say is its all over the place.

How would i encode this then. Should i use WM Encoder? Or is there something better that i should encode with. Preferably free.

Im encoding with WM Encoder right now which is taking FOREVER (2 Hours for one episode)

Will i be able to play this on a standard DVD Player that is hooked up to a TV or is there something else i should be using to encode.

I believe nero burning rom has support for making VCD and DVDs that will play in regular standalone players. Encoding only makes reading the file a little more efficient so it offloads a lot of the CPU and HD usage.

OK when we burned this to a DVD before encoding it changed the file to a .VOB file which takes up ~1gig of space. Should i encode it with WM ENcoder then burn it with the previous program. It seems that it is already encoding, but only when burned.

No but the encoding worked, it doesn't do that with the encoding. Now my problem is what to encode with for DVD playback from a DVD player. That thread is in the software forum, and i need help badly. Im so lost its funny.

Try this software specialized for making standalone DVD player-compatible video files. It displays stuff like QPel that inhibits standalone playback. http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=94529&page=1&pp=20

It uses XviD/DivX5/6 which are better than WM anyway. I don't think most DVD players support WMV, but it's not like I keep up with that stuff.

P.S. You are talking about external DVD players right, not internal PC DVD-ROM drives? For actual DVD you need MPEG-2 in VideoOBject files, NOT Windows Media. I'm pretty sure WMV doesn't work in VOB files. When the DVD player opens VIDEO_TS it expects the VOB files to contain MPEG-2. Anyway, what is your source codec? Why not just convert to raw MPEG-2 and burn to DVD? It would save you a lot of trouble, unless your TV show is too big for high-bitrate MPEG2 to fit onto a DVD. As to how to get that software's output to a DVD...who knows? Since the Doom9 forum requires 5 days before you post, I'll ask for you.

If its changing the file to .vob, its already encoding it for you.

No need to encode it twice, you could actually lose a little quality doing that.

Ok so the ones that i have already encoded into .WMV i should just delete and go back to the original. Ok.

Lastly, can windows movie maker support editing my raw MPEG 2 clips. Last time i tried i got this error:
C:\Documents and Settings\Kevin Boyd\Desktop\Friends-(The One Where No One Proposes)-2005-06-21-0.mpg could not be imported. An interface has too many methods to fire events from

Thanks for all the help, im actually now understanding what im doing.

I'd go DiVX 5 and grab a cheap Philips DVP642 (~$60) to play them back. Awesome quality and an awesome player for next to nothing. XViD is also supported.

WMV really stinks. Then again, I hate Micro$oft and their DRM. And set-top players won't play any of that crap back because of the DRM and the bizillion codecs they have to support for the different formats.
