Tell me reasons to get and to not get an I-book

I want a laptop that has the video editing software like on the mac. Is the mac the right choice for this because there is no other alternative?

Or is there a PC laptop that does it just as good without the interface for less $$$?

Premire Pro, Avid or Vegas will run on an PC. Mac has Final Cut Pro. It's just up to you which platform / software you want to run.

Personally I have found video editing to be much better on a Mac. I have been doing DV since high school and the editing process is much nicer on a Mac. I'm not saying that Macs are perfect by any means, but I've had far less problems doing video on a Mac than on a PC. If you do decide to get a Mac, stay away from the MacBooks. They have a low screen resolution for video editing and a weak graphics card. Instead get the 15" or 17" MacBook Pro.

the MacBook Pro is quite a nice system. it might be worth it to wait until Apple releases them with merom. just make sure you get plenty of ram.

Another laptop pundit living in a reality distortion field.

Lets see...the laptop processor is the mobile Core duo hence sacrificing performance over the dekstop Core 2 Duo, a slower HD, slower everything else, etc., to save power. This why the same budget you put into a laptop I can put into a desktop running full out Core 2 Duos, or save some cash and run X2's, and absolutley rape the so called "high end" laptops. "Performance laptops" are in my opinion the biggest waste of cash in the frikken universe.

I would otherwise agree that OSX is more, well, ergonomic in terms of a multimedia workflow.

I would want to do the desktop, but I already got one.

My question in general was: If I wanted to do video editing and have a laptop, is my best bet the Macbook Pro? or can 2000 buy me a better PC laptop if including price of software?

Yes I know desktops are more powerful. Hell, if I wanted to I could just make this the do it all machine, but I have always wanted a laptop.

As great as Premier Pro is, nothing that costs less than the hardware itself can be FCP.

you must know some crappy video editors then....everyone( okay the 4) i know requires a production deck (which is usually enatails a decent video capture card of some sort), at LEAST 500GB of HD space, 4GB of ram, and dual processors. any less and they are stuck there for days waiting for things to process.

Durr... Are we talking professional or even amateur filmmakers and/or full post-production of videos/short films/movies, or are we just talking about some dude who wants to be able to do some basic editing from videos he most likely shot on his handheld DV cam, webcam, etc?

Consider what the OP most likely requires, not what he COULD use if he threw a bunch of cash at it, or what the extreme end of the topic could require.
