Currently I'm living on a $11k a year salary in the Bay Area and am basically eating whatever crap Safeway market has on sale when I go. It is so bad for me (I am a bit underweight at 6'2" 150), and I want something very healthy to at least psychologically convince myself that I am not slowly eating myself into an early death. Most of what I eat now is frozen food such as Celestes, cup of noodles, pudding, bran cereal and yogurt, and microwaveable burritos (20 cents per burrito @ 300 calories each!)

What is the one food, regardless of cost, that you think could supplement my inexpensive but unhealthy diet. As is I already take a daily vitamin.

Edit: I do eat celery with peanut butter 3-4 times a week, but it gets old if I eat it too regularly.

UPDATE: Going to college in the fall with an unlimited mealplan. SCREW YOU GUYS! :p

Yogurt. Preferably Yoplait's fat-free yogurt. I used to hate yogurt until I tried that one. Now I eat it 1-2 times a day. It's also "the only yogurt that's clinically proven to burn more fat." You've probably seen it on TV commercials.

Have you tried yogurt with granola topping? It's pretty good.

Seconded, not only are they really inexpensive, they are really good for you.

And lots of variety.

:)

I need to eat more beans but how do you cook them and make 'em tasty?

Unless you are in school, you need to re-evaluate your entire life, not just what you eat. 11k a year obviously isn't cutting it.

Any legumes. Buy in bulk, cook them up.
Broccoli-being possibly the most nutrient-rich vegetable.
Apple slices smeared in peanut butter.

Costco also has canned chicken chili with only 1% total fat per serving. It has chicken and beans. I open up a can and start adding all the vegetables I like and more chicken. By the time I'm done adding everything, it will be able to last 2-3 meals. Try adding it with Kraft fat-free singles cheese slices.

I love broccoli but prefer them steamed with a little salt.

Are steamed veggies just as healthy as raw veggies?

If they're steamed only briefly, then yes. So tasty too.

See my post above :) Costco's Cattle Drive Chicken Chili with Beans. I think it tastes pretty damn good even straight out of the can. 99% fat free!

Oh yeah I forgot to mention, the yogurt can also be bought at Costco. It comes in a package of 18 cups. Both the 6 pack of chicken chili and 18 cups of Yoplait fatfree yogurt are about $7-8 each. Very inexpensive!
