You could do a build your own WHS 2011. A Chenbro ES34169(4 bays) or Fractal Design Array(5 3.5 plus 1 2.5 for OS) NAS case for ~$150. Add an Asus E-350 mobo/cpu combo for $120(6 SATA ports) and your good to go. If you don't have any ram laying around add another $20 plus $50 for the OS. If you like the WHS OS then it's a solid way to go. This is the method route I'm eyeing pretty hard whenever HD prices come back down to reality.

If I go that route what would be the best MOBO/CPU combo? This?

Does it support 3TB hard drives? I think I am going to go with this case

http://www.wegotserved.com/2010/08/04/cfi-a7879-mini-itx-nas-case-perfect-fit-windows-home-server/

That mobo would work fine. This one has six ports but with that case it doesn't really matter. You'd have to contact them to specify on the 3TB HD's but I don't see why it wouldn't.

I like that case, a lot. It's a lot more compact than the Fractal I have been eying and losing only one HD spot, pus $20 cheaper.

That case is Mini-ITX, so you will need a Mini-ITX motherboard to go with it. An E-350 is a good choice for a NAS, and the ASUS E35M1-I is a pretty good deal right now at $95 AR.

Also, 3TB HDD support is more a function of your OS than your mobo, the standard 48-bit LBA addressing mode is good for 128 exabytes.

Case: If you really like that Lian Li, go for it. Otherwise I would suggest the Fractal Design Array R2. Seriously, do you really need hot-swap capabilities? I actually have the Chenbro S34169 case and it is kind of a pain to work with.

PSU: Depends on the case you end up getting. The Fractal case uses an SFX size and already comes with one. The Chenbro uses a proprietary PSU that it comes with. The CFI uses a Flex ATX PSU and comes with one. Thus, only the Lian Li would need a PSU. Also, 500W is around 380W too much! If going with the Lian Li case, get the lowest wattage PSU you can find that is not crap and is 80Plus certified. For instance Seasonic makes two 300W 80Plus Bronze units available at Newegg for $40. SS-300ES uses an 80mm fan and SS-300ET uses a 120mm fan. For the Lian Li case, I would almost go with the 80mm fan version, just to retain a nice front-back airflow.

OS and motherboard are fine.

RAM: Completely 200% overkill for these reasons. The motherboard only uses up to 1066MHz RAM, plus is only single channel. Also, I don't think the extra few GB RAM would help a single bit in file serving and backing up over the network. Something like this 2GB single stick of Crucial DDR3-1333 for $9 with free shipping would probably perform exactly the same as the 8GB dual channel DDR3-1333 kit you choose. You only lose the fancy heatspreaders.

That combo eSATA + USB 3.0 card looks nice.

Ok, Well just to be safe, I went with 4GB of Ram, and I was looking at the fractal one and heard people had a hard time with the HDD tray and clearance, but maybe I will take a second look

As of right now it will house a 2.5in 80GB HDD for OS
2x2TB and 1x1.5TB For Data, and in a month or 2 when HDD prices come back down I will get a 3TB HDD
