Tell Me If This is True

I have filled out the online version for Fed. and Resident State in TurboTax. Can I e-file using that, then fill out manual non-resident forms and send those in separately? Or do I have to file all these forms in all together?

I also don't understand exactly what's going on. I live in MA and have worked in GA and NJ. I received W2's for these two states. Entering all this info in turbotax has me OWING the MA state like $1,000. I don't get why that would be, as I have never owed before when only filing for one state. Did working in these other states screw me? (Taxwise)

My employer also provides a "Tax Equalization" process after we file our returns for those people who have travelled in an under 12-month period (as I have). I don't exactly know what they do in this process and whether this means I will receive some money back.

Anyone shed some light on all these questions? Your help is greatly appreciated.

when stuff gets complicated, like working in multiple states, don't do it yourself, get a professional tax person involved.

doing your own 1040EZ is fine and dandy, but you have a complicated tax situation, pay the $ for a professional to handle it

I was in the same situation as you are, worked in both WA and CA last year... you have to file a federal tax return, then a state tax return for each state appearing in your W2... However working in other states shouldn't increase your home state taxes, so you must have screwed something up here

Tax equalization means they will pay you back for any taxes you paid to states other than your home state, which means for any taxes you paid to GA and NJ your employer will pay you back...

so, theoretically, I will get the two non-resident state's money back?

Look up at the top of the list of topics. See the stickied thread labelled "ATOT's Second Annual Tax Time Thread!"? Try posting your question there.

Most importantly, can I file FEd and Resident online and then fill in my non-resident taxes separately and with paper?

Man, I am so glad that Australia abolished state income taxes, if this is the trouble that you have to go through......
