Meh, nothing special after playing it. I hate how the game gives you very little ammo and makes you rely on the gravity gun for everything... Pretty stupid in my opinion.

Of course, it is not any worse than the kill um all till their dead type gameplay either.

Whatever the case, the gravity gun is pretty much the entire game, or so it seems. Everything is very linear, so not much variety. Meh, decent FPS, but nothing great.

Half Life 1 was such a stellar game... Maybe because it was still a solid FPS and then added some puzzels, but this new HL 2: EP1 stuff is pretty much tedius gravity gun junk... After moving the car around for the second time, I was pretty much bored... But, oh no... Lets cover 7 holes with 7 cars and what do you know, there are exactily the amount of cars required for the amount of holes to cover. Wow, seems to realistic.

Seems too realistic 😛

😀

[gotcha back]

anyway . . . i agree . . as LINEAR as hell . . . i wish the FPS devs would take a page outta the "RPG book" and give us [at least] TWO ways to get something done. 😛

and it's just "more" of HL2 . . . HL1 was "stellar"? - except 1/3 the game was Crap [Xen] . . . have you forgotten so quickly?

and what about that aging Source Engine? . . . turn on your flashlight and enjoy the interplay of 'shadows & lighting' - NOT

perhaps Oblivion has 'spoiled' me . . . or i am getting tired of the "sameness" of the FPS . . . . but EP 1 has failed to keep my attention. 😛

Ouch, I am hurt... Mistake noted 😀 Well, HL1 was stellar because it was the first of its kind, I think. The voice sync was right on... I mean, in todays standards it is meh, but in 1997 that was it! It was totally cool...

I am not sure what to think of Source's graphics. In some ways they are very nice, but in others they look so, I dunno the word... fake? You are right about the flashlight... I guess I am spoiled with Far Cry running the 64 bit content patch rendered in "cold" mode... That looks REAL! I never new about the rendered modes before, so I left it on "default", but after changing it to cold, the game takes on a whole new experience. No more cartoony look.

Ok, yeah... Back to the topic... HL:EP1 if purchased at $8 is probably worth it to give you a few hours of enjoyment (partial) but if you have to pay $20, steer clear of this title.

Hl1 and Unreal were pretty "equal" imo [especially if you added the Unreal expansions] . . . the first 2/3rds of HL was just awesome . . . then Xen was "tacked on" - which was really crap [imo].

HL2 looks like a game with no story and no direction . . . just another mindless 'to be continued' till the fans wise up and stop paying $20 for 4 hours of 'continued' content . . .
:disgust:

i didn't seen anything 'new' in EP1.

and Source has [almost] NO shadows and lighting 😛
[i cant imagine anyone with a 'nice' system defending it]

and HDR looks crappy unreal . . .
[if this is 'HDR', i don't want it]

I payed full retail and would do it again, I enjoyed the game enough. You didn't enjoy it as much, and that's fine; from the reviews I've seen, though, you're in the minority (although I doubt you'd know it talking on a message board, it seems like it's the new 'cool' thing to do to bash new games, Oblivion included).

i don't mind seeing people give their opinion . . . it's "opinion"
[and i sure don't hold back mine] 😛

i wasn't expecting much with Hl2-Ep and my expectations were fulfilled . . . IF you are a fan of HL2 . . . it is just "more of the same"
[which isn't necessarily bad . . . i am just "spoiled" by Oblivion]. 😉

i mean it was 'ok' . . . i don't feel i wasted $7.99 . . . but . . .

well . . . you know

it just didn't 'do much' for me
:brokenheart:

My favourite FPS is Chronicles of Riddick:EfBB . . . wish there was an expansion for that. 😉

Well, I don't bash a game just to bash it, I have plenty of reasons to dislike Valve and I have listen them before. I will list them again.

1. The "loading" in HL2 is deplorable (EP1 is better).
2. Graphics are sub-par compared to D3 or Far Cry.
3. Valve completely lied about things being scripted. Are people so quick to forget a dishonest act? I don't have any respect for them after that. They are pretty 'low' in my book.
4. Releasing a 4 - 6 hour title at $20? They have clever marketing... I hope people wise up and don't spend the $20 for 1/16" of a real game. If people did the numbers, they would probably not purchase it until it was in the $10 (what it is actually worth, subjectively).
5. The complete lack of real story... This is opinion, strictly... But I think the story is aimless and weak.

You will notice that I rarely bash Far Cry or D3/Q4 type stuff and I also don't bash Oblivion. The game rocks... So, I don't jump on the bangwagon. I form my OWN opinions on things and try my best not to carry an unreasonable bias.

I bought it on sale for $15 and I am glad I didn't pay more for it. To be honest, I am surprized by the amount of positive comments for EP1. Please keep in mind I am not critizing those that liked it, I just felt it was rather dull and repetitive.

The main problem, as I see it, is that the weapons are rather weak. The novelty of the gravity gun was wearing thin towards the end of HL2 and EP1 does nothing to make it more interesting. The other weapons aren't anything to write home about either. It isn't so much that they are bad, I just wish they had done something with them to make them more entertaining to use (better sound would have helped).

Unless something changes dramatically for EP2 I will probably not buy it unless it goes on sale for $10 or less (yeah, I missed the EP1 CC deal...purchased too early).

it was pretty good, but short. It was worth the money but I hope they add some new guns in the next episodes cause personally HL2 guns suck.. I need an m4 or AK.

If anything, I hate most of the weapons because they SOUND stupid.

I've shot pistols before, and they don't sound like rocks hitting the ground as they take a long fall... and the pulse rifle just sounds like "buh-dumba-ba-dumba-ba-dumba"... like someone beating a plastic bucket. If they want to make it more realistic, they need to make the sound of the guns overpowering... because when shooting a real gun it breifly deafens you if you aren't wearing hearing protection.

Overall, I think the weapons are just BORING. I love the magnum because it's probably the most realistic (except for it's accuracy), but they never give you enough ammo to play with it for long.

Yea because that pulse rifles secondary fire was boring too... who wants a bouncing ball that goes crazy and kills 4-5 enemies dead? Just boring... yeah.... OMG dont get me started on the gravity gun, talk about BORING!! Picking up a television set and throwing it through a window... damn that is just SO not FUN!! Throwing bottles and chairs at combine soldiers is also real boring... totally hated that... 😕

1 Serious thing i can say about the weapons are the lack of a gatling cannon/other heavy machine gun, but thats all.

Plus noone plays a game for realism, realistic games would be boring. Why not instead of losing 25% health when somone shoots you in the legs, that you lose your legs and end up crawling around the game at an incredibly slow pace, or how about getting rushed to a nearby hospital when shot, and going through 6 hours of surgery! Sounds like fun!. Also if you wanna be deafened by the guns, buy some 500w speakers and crank them up to full whenever you shoot anything.

Yeah because I am not strong enough to pick up a bottle and throw it with my own hands... I need a gravity gun for that? Yay, that is awesome. Here, let me use this gravity gun to pick up and hold my spoon so I can eat breakfast with it. This game rocks!

Here, let me put exactly 3 broken cars and have exactly 3 holes to put them over, no more, no less and lets use the gravity gun to complete it. Lets also grab power balls with the gun and shoot them to create bridges. Then lets do that for every part in the game to advance to the next level. That sounds like a game that should be created... Oh wait, they already have all of that... It is called HL2:EP1 😀

I don't mind the scripting thing so much... Game developers lie like that to varying degrees all the time. And as far as game time, you have to realize that the average first-person shooter these days isn't near as long as the likes of Oblivion. Really, this game is about a third the length of HL2, and Games like Doom 3 and Far Cry weren't much longer than that. Admittedly it's still a bit much to pay for a computer game of its length at this point, but I still found it worthwhile.

That whole 'bandwagon' thing wasn't directed entirely at you, but at others in this thread and others concerning the likes of HL2.

that kind of realism is not really part of the HL world . . . . you have your 'special suit' that takes good care of you and some pretty remarkable meds . . .

i understand totally that you are a fan of HL2 and the 'novelty' of the Gravety Gun hasn't yet worn off - for you - if ever.

i played with that damn thing for hours in HL2 and was just hoping for something 'more' . . . and i got more . . . of exactly the same.

"immersion" is the key for me . . . i just never felt 'part of the HL2 world' . . . very distant like watching a *very predictable* movie where you really have NO control even though you are supposed to be "guiding" the char [i guess].

i guess RPGs - and hybreds like DE - have spoiled me - i am so sick of LINEAR and the silly puzzles in the way of my goal . . . i'd much prefer at least a couple of ways to do something. 😉
