Tell me about half life:2 episode one

Ive recently found steams "store" and in hindsight of hating steam for so long, the theory is sound. I can buy and play a game right here and now, IF i had a credit card which i dont.

So basically episode ones got me interested, whats it about? barney? whatherface, the girl from half life 2? colonel shepard? Is the G-man in it? I mean will he make an appearance, not just standing 10 miles in the background for somone to notice and subsequently boast about on a forum somwhere. Is it worth me going and asking mom for £12 😀 i only have switch you see and they dont take switch, so ill need her credit card.
 
The complex you destroyed in HL2 is having a reactor failure, so you and Alyx need to escape City 17. Add a great scribt and great acting and that's pretty much it.... without any spoilers of course.
 
too bad you can't get it in the States . . . it's still on sale at Circuit City for $7.99

i am STILL waiting for Steam to update . . . they still have that awful delivery system . . . i am about to play Ep1 and will post in the 'official' Ep 2 thread [or here if it is still going]

i hear it's pretty short . . . about 6 hours at most.
[i won't mind if it's really 'quality']

7.99 at CC? Wow... You may have just have solved my withdrawal symptons from my video game addiction... I am not a fan of HL2, but any decent FPS at 7.99 cannot be passed up easily. I'll check it out.

it starts nicely enough. i finally updated at 4 hours and Steam lets me now play 'offline'.

i believe the Sale ends Saturday and CC is OOS in many stores . . . if so, just buy it for $7.99 and pick it up when it comes in shortly. . . . i bought mine Monday and picked it up today. 😉

and NO video game is the best 7 hours of MY life 😛

[although Oblivion has provided me with some of the best gaming in the 592 hours i have played it.]

Well... Alyx was basically dead after HL2, assumed to be caught in the explosion. Freeman was being sucked back into a stasis of some sort. Episode 1 picks up with your rescue by a third party. I know it's all a bit of a deus ex machina but regardless it's still a spoiler if you haven't played it.
 
I just finished it last night and I thought it was great. You (gordon) are fighting alongside alyx for most of the game. I took my time and it lasted 4-5 hours or so. I started playing through it again with the comment mode, which I think adds a lot of interesting insight into the game design process. I'd say it's worth $20.
 
It was easily worth $20 for me, as I enjoyed every minute of it more than I did much of HL2 (there wasn't any real 'filler'), but then again I'm a HL fan.
 
I like the fact that they dont just translate $20 into £20, i know what the exchange rate is but many companies charge the same pound amount over here as the dollar amount in the US, which is garbage. Logitech with their Z5500's is one example of that.

Anyways for £12 inc tax im now downloading episode 1 🙂 sweet!

lol, i completed it earlier, and thought the exact same thing. The bit with the g-man is interesting though. Cant wait for half life 3 until all these questions are answered.

I found this site useful in wrapping up the story as a whole. If you havent played half life 2 or episode 1, there ARE spoilers there. Obvious really since the whole sites dedicated to the half life saga.
 
it was pretty good, but short. It was worth the money but I hope they add some new guns in the next episodes cause personally HL2 guns suck.. I need an m4 or AK.

They'll replace some of the weapons eventually. If the Combine bring in more troops, that means they'll need a good rifle other than the pulse rifle.
 
Meh, nothing special after playing it. I hate how the game gives you very little ammo and makes you rely on the gravity gun for everything... Pretty stupid in my opinion.

Of course, it is not any worse than the kill um all till their dead type gameplay either.

Whatever the case, the gravity gun is pretty much the entire game, or so it seems. Everything is very linear, so not much variety. Meh, decent FPS, but nothing great.

Half Life 1 was such a stellar game... Maybe because it was still a solid FPS and then added some puzzels, but this new HL 2: EP1 stuff is pretty much tedius gravity gun junk... After moving the car around for the second time, I was pretty much bored... But, oh no... Lets cover 7 holes with 7 cars and what do you know, there are exactily the amount of cars required for the amount of holes to cover. Wow, seems to realistic.

If anything, I hate most of the weapons because they SOUND stupid.

I've shot pistols before, and they don't sound like rocks hitting the ground as they take a long fall... and the pulse rifle just sounds like "buh-dumba-ba-dumba-ba-dumba"... like someone beating a plastic bucket. If they want to make it more realistic, they need to make the sound of the guns overpowering... because when shooting a real gun it breifly deafens you if you aren't wearing hearing protection.

Overall, I think the weapons are just BORING. I love the magnum because it's probably the most realistic (except for it's accuracy), but they never give you enough ammo to play with it for long.

anyway . . . i agree . . as LINEAR as hell . . . i wish the FPS devs would take a page outta the "RPG book" and give us [at least] TWO ways to get something done. 😛

and it's just "more" of HL2 . . . HL1 was "stellar"? - except 1/3 the game was Crap [Xen] . . . have you forgotten so quickly?

and what about that aging Source Engine? . . . turn on your flashlight and enjoy the interplay of 'shadows & lighting' - NOT

perhaps Oblivion has 'spoiled' me . . . or i am getting tired of the "sameness" of the FPS . . . . but EP 1 has failed to keep my attention. 😛
