Well I used to live there. What do you want to know?

Its full of money, but the town is bankrupt.

The province just sent me $400, but they can't afford cops in Fort McMurray.

Gangs are rampant.

Every kid drives a $20,000 ricemobile.

Every 2nd person is Newfie.

Drugs are massive.

Rent on a one bedroom is about $1200-1500/mo

I worked on an Engineering project at Syncrude in Fort McMurray in 2003. Money was great, but the town itself is just a dive. The service in restaurants in town is absolutely terrible.

I live at approximately the same latitude ... just on the western side of the province. Tons of people have been leaving my pulp mill for jobs in Fort Mac because the oil industry has been paying ridiculous wages. Tradesmen are making in the 100K's, and executives much more. Housing is nearly unaffordable, facilities overloaded and the town isn't very nice. There are tons of 'rig pigs' wih a penchant for drugs, alcohol and fighting.

The oil sands are completely amazing though, and even if you're not doing some work for them, go on a tour, the scale is phenomenal.

What sort of work are you going to be doing there?

And for those who asked, a newfie is a Newfoundlander (from the province of Newfoundland), and yeah, there are tons of them up here.

If you have any questions in particular about it, feel free to PM me.

Edit: it can be pretty damn cold in the winter ... but summers are pretty temperate.

I heard if you get a job on the tar sands pit you can earn $100-$120K per year but you are living in no mans land...prepare to bring the blow up dolls LOL

You guys have any info or links on how to get into that (working at the oil sands)? I've thought about working on an offshore oil rigs, but oil sands sounds great too.

Get a degree in Chemical Engineering, that's one way. Lots of my friends in ChemEng go up there to work on internships, and I've a got a friend graduating heading out there for a full-time job, after graduation.

Only highly skilled tradesmen will see 6-figure salaries like that. The majority of people work in the plants, not in the tar sands pit as you describe it. My company had me there (Syncrude) on a 1 month rotation a few years back and as an Engineer I did make 6 figures that year, however, many are making far less.

Stay away from drinkin and drugs. Bring a laptop or something to keep you entertained during non work hours.
