That's becuase MS has a deal with plantronics to sell them the headsets. The company I work for does Plantronics online store, and they have a complete Microsoft store..go figure. USB is better though because they are noise cancelling, and a ton more accurate.
 
From what I've read... most sound boards have terrible mic in quality. If you want to use a sound card, it is suggested you use a preamp and go in the line-in...

What you say about the USB microphone's having higher quality is what I've read. On groups.google.com the speech recognition people all seem to say it is better...
