I've been starting to realize it more and more every day. TV is telling us what to think, and how to act. Some stations are obviously bigger culprits than others, but most if not all of television is slipping values to us, without us even knowing it. Watching childrens TV is the absolute worst culprit, they do it right in your face by telling you out loud what to think.
Not that I think theres some secret society out there running everything from the background, but TV does not reflect real life. The absolute worst culprit is MTV. The programs and people on MTV are a blatant distortion of real life. Ugly people are worthless on MTV. The most important thing is looking good, and sex is everything. Just take one look at britney spears. Unfortunately, she is the primary role model on tv for young girls. Every girl wants to be britney spears. Its sickening. Thinking for yourself isnt the answer. Just be cool, and follow the pack.
One of my friends just got into his first relationship, and my god, the both have them act like they have watching FAR FAR too much MTV. I dont even know how to describe it really, but they just met each other, and after 2 days the girl just dropped the L-bomb. They barely know each other.
Not that CNN is really any better. Telling us what is important in the world, and who is right and who is wrong. After sept 11 things only got worse. Now unless you were a fanatical patriot, youre not a good american. Again, leave the thought up to CNN. They'll tell you who's right and who's wrong. Bad arafat!
Anyone else know what I'm saying? I know I'm kind of babbling because I just woke up, but I know what I'm saying has some truth under it. I'm only 21 right now, and it seems like for the past couple years I've slowly been unlearning everything force fed to me by TV for my entire life. I'm beginning to see the hidden messages in nearly everything. I dont really watch much TV anymore, but when I do, it hurts my head sometimes cause its so in your face.
Not all TV is trash. Try as hard as I can, I cant really find much wrong with a good comedy, as long as values arent force fed down my throat, whether intentional or not. And the history and discovery channel pretty much just give it to you straight and dont tell you what to think.
Sitcoms teach us values by example. The news tells us who is good and who is bad. Sports tell us that everything else, including your health, is secondary to winning. Talk shows show us who not to be. MTV tells teenagers and young adults exactly how to be.
I'm not a dick that can't have a good time, I just think TV is an absolute abomination right now. Maybe its just a phase. I'd rather play some pc games, where even though its usually mindless violence, at least youre forced to think for yourself and not sit with your mouth wide open drooling on yourself watching pre-made programming. And a good book will definitely do it for me, since you really do have to have your own imagination to enjoy it.
Am I crazy or have I finally seen the light?
