I recently purchased a lovely 42" Panasonic Viera Plasma TV for the purposes of watching some intense football action on BBC HD Preview as well as just being a beast of a television for any other purpose. Fortunately, I like to dabble a bit and I hooked up my aging Socket A/AGP system up to it via a handy VGA port. Playing games like Need For Speed Carbon and Freelancer have just blown me away.... Dawn of War Dark Crusade in a native 1366x768 res was just to die for. Dont get me started on Homeworld 2.
BUT.... as you've heard here so many times, "a friend told me" that since I was using my VGA connection, compared to HDMI anything recorded from an HD Source (example Stargate Atlantis from Sky One HD) would be significantly reduced. I know VGA can be bested by other connections like DVI but the last time I cared, HDMI was something that I never considered to be using.
Is there any/much truth to what my friend suggests? Being on AGP and Socket A, Im not particularly interested in upgrading. I have enough power in my system to play and watch whatever I like. Money wont be kind to me for at least 6 months so an upgrade to PCI-E with all the new chips and RAM is out of the question in the short term.
If there is a significant difference, paired with a Socket A 1700+, is there a graphics card you'd recommend to replace my 9800 Pro?
Thank you for any help.
