Telephone question, funny beep after ring?

Every once in a while, like once every other week or so I'll dial out from my phone but after each ring I hear a strange beep. Does anyone have any idea what this means, if anything that is? Or am I just being overly paranoid...

i get it when calling my gf's cell phone. I've heard it two other times before on a regular basis calling the same number, but i don't call those numbers as often anymore.
