Tekram P6pro A+ problem w/parallel and serial

I have a Tekram P6Pro A+. I am having a problem with both the parallel and serial ports. They seem to only work in one direction. I have tried using a Zip drive on the parallel port and the installer will not find the drive. I know that the drive works because I tested it on another computer. Also the serial ports (there are two) only work in one direction. I tried connecting this computer with another computer using hyperterminal and it only seemed to work in one way.
I set the BIOS setting for the parallel port to "EPP+SPP" only because there was no option for Bi-directional but I was informed that this would work anyway. The BIOS setting for the serial port is "UART COM 2." Does anyone know what the problem may be?
