I took my Aero Bed, the finest quality air mattress available at Target, with me on my trip to London to sleep on at my cousin's place. I had a plug converter, but no voltage converter. My Dad insisted that it would work safely no matter what the voltage is. And yes, he is aware off voltage differences, and has lived overseas. I'm not sure what gave him the impression that it was one of those voltage adapting devices, but that's what he thought and that's what he told me.
When I got to England, I plugged it in, and it inflated fine. Although, it did seem to inflate a bit too quickly. It took about 10 seconds, whereas on the box it says that it takes 60 seconds to inflate. There did not appear to be any damage done, but to be on the safe side I didn't use the inflator any more for the remainder of the trip.
When I got back, I read the manual, and it says that it's for 110V only. :Q I'm lucky it didn't burn and catch fire or melt or whatever when I was over there. Seriously, what are the risks involved when you plug a 110V appliance into 220V? P=V^2 *I, so I'm guessing it gets 4 times the normal power.
