OK I need help. My grandma used to give me this fantasitc coffee, "Simply the Best" with no ID on it so i dont know where its from or where to get more. She's all out now. It was delicious and free. So now I picked up a starbucks pound from the supermarket but its a little pricey at $8.

So I need to find the best coffee for the money. What do you folks drink that tastes great and has the best value? Keep in mind that my tastes for the finer things in life has matured thru college, so just like i won't drink coors light or other nasty beer, I won't drink Foldgers or Crapwell house instant coffee. I want that "gourment sh¡t"!

Just a heads-up. Sometimes target B&M has starbucks ground coffee at @ $2.99/pound.

I like the sumatra and expresso roast.

I usually go for black and sugarless French Roast or other strong neutral flavor blends but I actually like Starbucks' Sumatra. I grind my beans right before serving and use bottled water and serve only in ceramic mugs.

I have great luck with "Seattle's Best" french roast whole bean. 3 pound bag at costco for like 9 bucks. I store it in a vaccum sealed canister and grind just before brewing. Very good, strong, yet not bitter. I use filtered tap water.

I think the storage of coffee is very important. Oxygen and sunlight kill good coffee real quick.

Definitely. I store beans in my fridge in a sealed container otherwise the aroma escapes as with the flavor.

The reason it doesn't matter is because such a dark roast has essentially volatized all of the coffee oils that you'd otherwise want in a cup. What you're drinking is the remnants of a carbonized seed.

I roast my own, because once you go fresh you can't go back. I generally have about 50lbs of green on hand. I end up paying ~$3-5/lb of the best coffee in the world. *$ and others charge 5+x the price of the coffee for the very little labor that goes into roasting your own beans.

Oh, and coffee isn't fresh beyond a few weeks of its roast date. Most of the larger roasteries don't even bother putting on a roast date. Preground coffee is never fresh, so don't even bother.

The brand name on the coffee doesnt matter much, what makes it best, is buy whole bean and ground it yourself. Keep it frozen, that keeps the flavor in. I like Folders and 8o'clock whole bean coffees.

fresh packages with the one way valve for off gassing of fresh coffee. decent indicator of quality i guess. starbucks is ok, but its not special for the price. costco sells 2lb bags of coffee beans that are decent

If you buy the beans and grind them yourself, folgers beans are good. My favorite probably. And that's like 4 bucks a pound regular, I think.

i drink all kinds of coffe...i like the starbucks...but for straight-up coffee (especially made at home) its really not worth the price. when lazy, i go for a cup from dunkin donuts.
however! my best home-made coffee experience short of an industrial barista machine has been the Philips Senseo. its pods so some people might not like it compared to buying the beans and grinding them directly before making but...ill tell you what, that is some damn fine, smooth and slightly frothy coffee.

edit for link:

nice!

I buy various green coffees from around the world and roast my own. The best thing you can do with coffee is have good quality FRESH beans. Something less than a week old is ideal.
Yesterday's (friday) wall street journal actually had a comparison of fresh coffee delivery services. Starbucks didn't have a chance.
