Teeth grinding while sleeping. Any guards that don't suck?

This comes up every once in awhile and apparently I'm going through one of those spells where I'm grinding my teeth while sleeping through the night off and on and it's enough to wake my wife up over and over throughout the night.

I've tried so many damn teeth guards over the years and I HATE them all (that I've tried) every time. I always feel like I'm going to gag from them when I'm laying on my back and otherwise just tend to have discomfort and it ends up screwing up my sleep.

Anyone out there suffer from grinding their teeth while sleeping that's found a specific brand or model OTC guard that is better than all the rest?

Even searching through Amazon and reading reviews every single option has such a wide mix of reviews. I can't seem to find any clear option.

I've done the custom molded ones where you boil them.

I even had one made from a dentist.

I've tried cheap to expensive ones over the years.

Every time I can't even make it one night with them in and wind up losing them or throwing them away after not using them long enough.

I took a sharp knife to mine and cutoff the excess that wasn't doing anything more than making me feel like I was going to throw up.

Do something though. I didn't at first and now have terrible TMJ.

Hmmm. Could take my Dremel to one I suppose.

I was eyeing this sites options. http://www.sparklingwhitesmiles.com/Custom-Teeth-Night-Guards.php

Specifically the very bottom option, while it's expensive I'm wondering if the ultra thin acrylic would be better for someone like me that is so gag sensitive to these things.

Has anyone with grinding issues tried bottom guards? They let you pick if you get top or bottom guards and everything I've tried so far has been top.

I have TMJ as well. I went to the dentist and had a custom guard made. Fail at first - I'd wake up the next morning with some pain in my front teeth, so I went back for a redo, helped a bit. You just have to make sure you wear it every night, your teeth shift a bit. If you go long without wearing it you'll be SOL

Have you tried this one?

http://www.doctorsnightguard.com/

It's what I use. Goes for $35-$40 in Canada, and I've been using mine for about half a year, I think, so far. Still works, just starting to smell like bad breath. You just heat it in water, then bite down and suck on it. Molds/hangs onto your top teeth securely if you do it right.

My benefits would cover $400 for a dentist one, but I still have to cough up the money first, and there's a deductible, so for the sake of long-term sustainability I went for this. Teeth grinding sucks, and it's worrying since I've already carved a ridge into my teeth.

Heh, I honestly don't even see mine or anyone elses since I have avatars disabled in my options. Just looks cleaner when neffing at work ;)

Looks like Wal-Mart carries it for about $20 locally. Might give this one a try tomorrow.

Thanks!

I have this one and it works for me stays in over night but seems to suffer from the same problems you have had with other ones. I found it to be really big after mouding it so I just cut off any extra material so it wasnt so damn big. Only crappy part is it is starting to wear away so I will have to buy another one soon.

all the cheap ones suck. by far the best (most comfortable and durable) was via my dentist. take an imprint in the office, send out to be fabricated. the ones from drugstore cannot compare.

I had one made before and couldn't take it.

Granted this was years ago with a different dentist and maybe the dentist I have now would give me something better. My insurance would probably cover all or most of it as I have pretty awesome coverage through the company I work for.

Already gave that bastard over $2,000 (not out of my pocket) at the end of last year for my root canal :(

The store ones suck. I broke down years ago and got one made at my dentist. The key is to make sure its comfortable before you leave the office. If its too tight in places, let them know and they will sand the tight parts down with a dremel until it fits comfortably. They are expensive (400-500 bucks) and not covered by alot of dental insurance. Its worth it though, trust me, I barely notice that its there, and it'll save alot of wear and tear on your teeth.

I have had 2 from the dentist.. first one was failure because it was too hard and "snapped" into place, pulling on my front teeth. Hated it. Finally had another one made 6 months ago at current dentist and it is a bit more flexible but still rigid and I love it. Wear it every night now. The first one was from around 10 years ago.

I had a custom one made for me a few years ago. Just recently cracked. IMO they are worth the money. It really sucks for me right now because my jaw is feeling some pain.

Unasked question is how toxic these effers are. There's drinking out of a plastic/resin cup, and then there's putting it in your mouth and sucking on them for 8 hours/day, 7 days a week, 365 a year.

Paranoid...

I wear mine only at night, and sometimes during the day if I catch myself grinding my teeth or clicking my jaw. But, not until I get a new one :(
