Teens Allowed to Play Before Going to Jail

I don't know how this is justice.

KENTON, Ohio -- A judge decided two high school athletes can complete the football season this fall before they serve 60-day jail sentences for a car crash caused by a decoy deer placed in a country road. Two teens were injured.

"I shouldn't be doing this, but I'm going to. I see positive things about participating in football," Judge Gary McKinley said Tuesday.

Dailyn Campbell, a 16-year-old quarterback for Kenton High, and 17-year-old teammate Jesse Howard will serve their time in a juvenile detention center. They were also ordered to write a 500- word essay titled "Why I Should Think Before I Act."

Last November, teens stole the decoy from a man's home, created a base to help it stand upright because it had only two legs, and then drove up and down the road, watching as drivers swerved to avoid it, prosecutor Brad Bailey said. He said Howard did not stop the prank.

2 SERIOUSLY INJURED

Robert Roby Jr. crashed his car into a pole and broke his neck, collarbone, arm and leg. His passenger, Dustin Zachariah, suffered brain damage, Bailey said.

Campbell and Howard pleaded no contest to vehicular vandalism and other charges. Three other teenagers are awaiting trial in the fall.

"None of these guys will ever know what our sons have gone through," Roby's mother, Mary, wrote to the court. "If they get nothing for what they've done, they'll do something worse later. They need more than a slap on the wrist."

Both Campbell and Howard apologized at their sentencing.

"I think every day that I hurt someone, and that hurts me inside," Howard said.

I don't know how heavy a decoy deer is, but if it caused injury then it must be more than a cardboard cutout. The bastards should be executed for attempted murder.

>I don't know how heavy a decoy deer is

It sounds like the injured people swerved and hit something else, not the decoy itself.

In further news the school has decided to get rid of classes and just have football since it's so important as to allow people to get out of jail for crimes.

Those bastards are getting off way too lightly. Because of them one person has a broken neck and the other has brain damage. WTF, 60 days in juvie for that? Not enough.

it seems the guy driving thought the deer was real and decided to take his chances with a telephone pole.

Yeah, didn't read the whole article. It's still just as bad though.

well that packers receiver got sentenced to jail time but doesn't have to face it until after the season is over. that's just how football is i suppose.

Man, I wish I was a jock instead of a geek. I don't think they'd let me out of jail to compete in a robotics competition.

They were High School kids playing a joke. I'm sure they didn't fully think through their actions.

A real deer could have just as easily been there. (The chances of an actual deer being there are actually higher, than the chances of teens stealing a deer decoy and placing it up)

I think the resulting punishment is fair.

I do not agree with you. Those two kids could've easily been killed. What then? What if one of them was yours?

If one of my kids would do something like that, I'd sure as hell make them wish they were in jail, I'd beat their asses black and blue.

Your assuming they swerved because they thought it was a real deer, and not something else. These kids endangered people on the road just for laughs, this punishment is far from fair.

Yeah but look at the injuries received by the kids who crashed their car. There's no way they received injuries like that from just swerving off the road to miss a deer. They were probably speeding and possibly drunk. We ahve deer in the road all the time where I live and I have no problem stopping before hitting them. Esecially if they are right in the middle of the road, it's pretty damn hard not to see them.
Now I'm not saying it wasn't a stupid prank, but it could not have caused the types of injuries they list there without other factors. Punishment of 60 days jail seems fair to me, but they shouldn't be playing football.

haha, you're banking on the one of the most popular theories ever invented by 5 year olds. Contrary to what your kid tells you, two "wrongs" don't make a "right".

Yes but if your action is only intended to cause a certain result, and because of someone elses action the result isfar worse, you're telling me there's no blame to be placed on that second person? I think you're wrong. What is that saying, intent is 9/10's of the law?

Edit: I got that wrong. Posession = 9/10's. SO I'm a tard. I still don't think the 60 day jail sentence was unreasonable assuming there are other factors left out in that news story. Letting them play football is bs.

What a canned response.

EXACTLY. That is just ridiculous.

Shame on the team coach for not kicking them off.

Totally agree. I am betting he probably lobbied for them to finish up their season. :|
