This thread gave me an idea. 4 years ago while hiking in the Grand Tetons National Forest I caught my toe while jumping from one rock to another, tripped, and cut my finger. It was very traumatic and clearly nobody has made an effort to make the are safe. I think I'll name the National Forest Service along with "Mother Nature" when I file my lawsuit.

Yes, he is stupid. Yes, it's his fault. But the garage, 95% of the time, will lose this case in court. If you have private property, it is your duty to keep it safe for all public. Even if you have a fence around your yard and a person walks into it and gets hurt, you are liable, because it is your property.
I never really understood how screwy the system was, till I heard about the old woman that spilled coffee on herself in a fast food joint, sued because it was too hot, and won. Wouldn't surprise me in the least if the family won the lawsuit. What there SHOULD be a law for... minimum intelligence to reproduce. Tie that kid's balls off. We don't need more morons in the world.

I was on that bandwagon about the Mcdonald's coffee until more of the facts of this case came to light...coffee should not cause 3rd degree burns when it spills on you (IIRC the coffe was kept at 180 degrees F)...Mcdonalds knew about this but didn't do anything...

as far as this kid goes though, he is just a dumb a$$ that just got his 15 seconds...

Well, yes. Take for example owners of backyard in-ground pools. There is an issue of un-intentional "contributory negligence". Kind of like if you have an old well out in back behind the farmhouse... you need to keep it well-covered to keep someone from un-intentionally falling into it. You could still be liable for it, even if they were trespassing on your property, as I understand it. Sort of a "collective responsibility towards the public safety" kind of thing. I'm perhaps not 100% in agreement with that, but that's the current state of things as I understand it. (For example, thief breaks in via the skylight, falls, breaks ankle, crippled for life, sues, wins.. WTF?)

Hey, you know, that gets me thinking. At least Pres. Bush didn't sue that pretzel mfg. company! There's something to look up to him for, as a "moral leader".

FVCKING NINJAS!

As it turns out, I'm pretty sure that that extreme walking video was a vid of David Belle, the creator behind the Le Parkour thing. Or at least someone affiliated with him. Same moves, same style, same locations. Still impressive.

Free running is not safe. Nor is walking. Or living.

I want safety signs on everything too, except I think they would oblitterate the world as we know it, as the world is a pretty dodgy place.

e.g.,

Warning: Jumping from this wall can be dangerous.
Warning: Jumping onto this sidewalk from a height of greater than 15ft can be dangerous
Warning: Running into this wall can be dangerous
Warning: This Elephant can be dangerous
Warning: Your own ass can be dangerous if you eat the sh!t that falls from it

Nice, bring it, I am ready.

reminds me of that farmer in England who was sued by one of three thieves who broke into his house. iirc he was burgled repeatedly, was fed up, and shot and killed one of them with his shotgun. one of the two that survived sued him, saying that he suffered mental damage of stuff like he wasn't performing sexually and that injuries he suffered meant he couldn't work (cos you know, breaking into people's houses and stealing stuff is a proper job).
sad thing is, he won, and the farmer went to jail. :disgust:

He didn't win - his case was thrown out.

The farmer did go to jail, however - he was judged to have used 'unreasonable force'.

Just to explain how this works in the UK - in order to protect your life, you can use force, up to and including killing the attacker, if this is called for. There is some leeway in this definition, as it is acknowledged that someone defending themself cannot be expected to precisely calculate the amount of force needed in the heat of the moment.

However, the farmer was found guilty as it was judged that he was lying in wait, in the dark, with an unlicensed shotgun, for the burglars. He had previously told friends that he intended to catch and kill burglars, and he shot the unarmed burglar in the back, as he was trying to run away. The court found that the farmer's actions were not in the heat of the moment, but premeditated, and used unreasonable force.

The Mcdonalds coffee incident (the woman was called Stella something) was not as unreasonable as it was made to seem - the woman had a reasonable complaint, and althought the original punitive damages were unreasonably large, she was in the right, and Mcdonalds were very much in the wrong. Look it up and you'll be very surprised by the differences to the story that everyone knows.

Sadly, the garage owners could be in trouble in court, as he acknowledged in the interview that they were aware that people had been jumping, and at least one person had failed to make it, before - i.e. they were aware a danger existed.

Sorry to sound preachy, but as a liability insurer, this is the kind of crud I have to worry about 9 to 5. But none of it obscures the fact that the kid should have taken himself out of the gene pool...

Stuff like this, where people are just blatantly stupid and then blame outside forces for their failures, just pisses me off.

Ditto.

Stupid fvcking kid.

Again like you stuff like this really p!sses me off.

Sue happy nanny state.

It's ridiculous that someone can sue for something like this.
Does the whole world have to be made fvcking moron proof in order to continue existing normally?

Him as his parents are trash. The only way they can make any real money is by sueing. Hopefully some tragic medical condition will sweep over him and his entire family.

...wow I hope that kid, his family, and all of their little moron friends are purged from the gene pool. What a bunch of f*cking idiots.

And if the judge doesn't throw this case out for sheer stupidity, I hope s/he's shot too.
