Only if you're grounded/touching the other wires I think. How do you think the birds do it?

Only if you touch something to ground yourself.

amish

They are insulated, most of them at least....

They are?? That's some serious insulation to block thousands upon thousands of volts.

That's odd. Birds don't get electrucuted because they only touch one line, apparently he was touching two of them.

Still thats crazy. How do you even think to grab onto power lines when you're flying through the air after an accident

Around here, most of our lines are insulated with some kind of thing. I dont know why......

You guys don't even know what kind of wires they were. It very well may have been cable TV lines.

the power company came out and gave a speech when i was in scouts a decade ago and said that most lines are not insulated, the reason they are black is because they are dirty.

The article said he had grabbed two lower lines (which were most likely Telephone and Cable). He would've been fried had he landed on the electic lines and "grabbed" two of them.

The reason why bird dont' get electricuted is because they don't ground themselves.
The entire wire is setting at some pretty high voltage, but simply setting on 'a' wire will not cause harm because the electricity
prefers to take the more conductive route provided by the wire.

T------------------------T

You can be anywhere on that wire but electricity prefers to travel through the conductive wire and not through body. But suppose any part of you body touches elsewhere like another wire or ground, than you form a 2nd path for the electricity to take. The difference of voltage between the wire you are touching and whatever other surface you come in contact with creates another route for the electricity to go through. Although the vast amount of electricity will stilll goes through the wire and take the more conductive route, an significant amount of electricity will travel through your body to get to that point where you are touching. Even contacts between two wires of the same Voltage RMS will produce sparkes because it is a 3 phase power system meaning at any one time the voltage between the 3 wires is most likely different.

He even managed to call his dad on a cell phone while waiting for rescue.

:Q

id be too freaked out to reach for anything, let alone my cell phone in my pocket while dangling 20-25 feet in the air...

I think rolling your car over 5 times qualified for it being a heckuva'n accident already. I don't care if it's an SUV or not. ;)
