either way, you have to be pretty vapid to miss an oncoming train.

ok.. but what other explanation can you suggest for two people to completely miss an incredibly loud siren? / why are you walking on train tracks to begin with ?

Easy, sometimes the trains don't blow their horns. Here in Southern California people living near the tracks bitch and moan about the train horns. So they bribe their city officials and the city officials pass ordinances that prohibit train horns in certain areas. I didn't read the story so I have no idea if this was the case in this situation.

Also some of the Metro and Amtrack trains around here don't always have the locomotive in the front. Sometimes it is in the back of the train pushing the cars in front of it. Does anyone know if there is a lookout at the front of the train? Or is it just a camera? It may have been impossible to see the kids so no horn may have been blown as a warning.

Also was it dark. Maybe the kids just were not seen?

EDIT OK nevermind, read the article and it said the horn was blowing. However how far in advance? It also did not mention how fast the train was going. So how much notice did the kids actually have?

1. trains are loud, regardless of a horn blowing or not.

2. if you are walking on train tracks, you will feel vibrations long before the train is close enough to hit you.

sucks he died but it seems like it was very easily avoidable.

I actually read that a lot of train deaths are not necessarily due to people just not paying attention, but they don't realize how far the train actually extends from the tracks. They believe they are in a safe zone, near the tracks, but they aren't far enough to away to miss being hit. I only know this because Miss Deaf Texas was hit by a train and killed. The story included a study.

Either way, if you get hit by a train and you didn't fall into the subway or something, you are deserve it.

Not freight trains. In the pictures it shows coal cars. Max speed for a coal train is around 50 mph. So fast, but not fast as hell. I would still think you would feel/hear the trains vibrations before it hit you unless you were in a noisy area.

When you outlaw trains only outlaws will be trained to spot outlaw trains raining down on their training grounds.

I really don't understand the idiocy of walking on train tracks without making sure you're 100% aware of your potentially dangerous surroundings. On the other hand... Teenagers.

Driver is in the cab car. Even though the train is going backwards, it is being driven from controls at the front. (IE the "front" as in the direction of movement.)

Would it be inappropriate to poast something about how she thought the train from behind was scheduled for after the dance?
