Cool, getting into the story now.

I was once looking at some properties in Arkansas you can buy with their own natural caves on the premises. I immediately fantasized about owning such a piece of land what I would do with the cave... build the ultimate guy's hangout? build my secret laboratory? make some paths and start giving tours? ah I would have probably just left it alone

Yeah I read that a long time ago, but it's really a good, creepy story.

This is one repost that deserves to be read :)

Assuming the story is true, did anyone ever figure out what cave it is, and what happened to ted after his final excursion to the cave?

Google it I guess.

Like I have seen several places - if something happened, they went missing, etc. then surely it would have ended up in the news and be able to be found.

Is a 2001 spider or gooseman. The whole idea was to lead up to the cliffhanger and never respond :p

credits to folks at abovetopsecret for finding this, but this seems to be the cave the story is written around:

http://www.nps.gov/archive/tic...lery/InterstateMap.pdf

notice the glaring similarities...

  • a cave uncovered by new construction (digging for a new highway)
  • Textsurveyed between Jan '01 and Feb '02
  • if you look at the profile of the cave, the descent to the lower part is remarkable similar to the one portrayed in the story (not a straight decent but offset a few times)
  • Has a passage named "Floyd's Tomb"
  • Has a small opening to "Floyd's Tomb" coincidentally named "Dewalt's Dig"- as in Dewalt cordless drills...
  • Has a passage before Floyd's tomb which has one part going down into water and one part coming from the entrace, which matches exactly the description in the story and the only photo of "B" in the story.
  • Has a passage after Floyd's Tomb called "Gypsum Passage"- Gypsum in natural form can look like crystals as was described in the story
  • At the end of the passage following Floyd's Tomb is an area commented with "roadfill and traffic sounds" which is probably what inspired this story in the first place

I enjoyed reading this story and was happy to find it was inspired by some guys surveying a cave who had a good imagination :)

oh, here's another link with background on this story:

The story is actually a word for word rip off from a different short story that had a horrifically cheesey ending. Somebody took that other story, cropped off the end, and made it look like a web journal for effect.

That was a fun story. Being a caver myself I could tell the author was fairly experienced and I am sure it was all the result of a bunch of caving buddies getting together and putting together a good yarn because the real story of caving is rather boring to describe - but fun to do.

He did hit his head an awful lot though for a caver. And who doesn't look down to see whats on the rope first.

That would be so awesome if true, but the whole ending in a cliffhanger felt too predictable. But a damn good read. Would make for an excellent movie.

So, it sounds like the people that actually explored that cave, created a fun story?
I'd love for something like this to be true, just because I like having a sense of real mystery in life. Makes life a little more fun.
I guess that's for ghosts. I have no logical explanation for ghosts, but I have a very real belief that they exist. And I have my reasons.

haha, I read that 3 years ago in Comp Sci in high school. It was a good way to waste time for two days. Cool story, but obviously fake.

Never wanted to invest the time to read it. Glad I did, very enjoyable. I had a sense of dread for the poor guy. It felt very believable and possible up till the end. I was hoping it would be, but all along I was figuring there was going to be some creature twist instead of unanswered mystery, and with that in mind I was prepared all along for it to be fake.

Where did the story fall apart for you and turn you into a skeptic?

For me, it was when he said he took pictures of the part of the cave with hieroglyphs but then mysteriously... the images wouldn't develop. At that point I thought the story was fiction. Before that I was thinking I was reading a true story.
