'The the consumer graphics industry is about to see yet another round of competition between top market players AMD and NVIDIA in March, with reports suggesting that the red team (AMD) has chosen March 8 as the launch date of its Radeon HD 6990 graphics card. NVIDIA's response, the GeForce GTX 590 is slated for sometime later in March, as well. AMD is said to be finalizing the SKU, and it should be launched by partners on the 8th of next month. The Radeon HD 6990 is a dual-GPU "CrossFire on a stick" solution, in which two AMD Cayman GPUs with 2 GB of memory each, work in tandem.'

With all the rumors pointing to nvidia's 590 using two 570 cores rather than 580s, this should be an interesting launch. Prices may be kept in check as with these specs neither card will eclipse the other, but rather each have its own set of games where it is the better choice.

37watt idle,..... 350watt typical load.

Does the 350watts mean its PCIe certified? I thought that was 300watts max? if their over it what will that mean for them?

It means Dell or HP won't use them in ther machines , BIG WOOP!

It also means that a NVIDIA dual gpu has basically no limits. :)

This thread is a repost.

My impression is that it meets the 300W limit unti you flip the bios switch at which point it exceeds the ceiling.

The switch gives it a 8% overclock. I hope that doesn't bring it to 350 watts? wow! 50 watts per 8%? That does make some sense, 450 watts with a 24% overclock.

It does say 350 watts while playing a game in the article I read.

What rumors are you referring to? All the rumors I've seen have pointed to the gtx590 having 1024 cores in use. Please cite sources.

Thats with powertune maxed out on the 1st BIOS setting. The 450 is with powertune maxed out on the 2nd BIOS witch adds that 8% OC plus a bunch of voltage too for added overclocking. That would easily increase the power usage.

The board power for a 6950/6970 is 200W/250W, but you never see that ever, unless powertune is set to 20% and thats only in Furmark/OCCT.

yes I just read some India article that had a gtx590 picture and it stated 1024 cores, it also had a tmu,rop count but no clocks.
Now I can't find it. dammit!

Well that sucks 8% overclock with 450 watts?
Is that what your saying?
Or 8% overclock with 350 watts and max overclock at 450 watts?

Yeah those are pretty good rumors, considering techspot thought the 6990 would have 3840SPs and nordichardware says the 590 was suppose to be out last month.

I would trust Napoleon long before any of those sites.

Those are two sites repeating the same rumor. I generally stick to Chiphell for reliable rumors. They are consistently right unlike the more shameful page hit grabbing sites. There is a thread there from Napoleon with a statement of two 570 cores being used in the 590.

Should come as no surprise. Who expected nvidia to try and compete with a $700 AMD card with a $1000 card. Likewise, why expect them to sell the $1000 performance of 580SLI for substantially less on a single card?! They're in the business of making money and as long as 580s keep selling for $500 they're not going to sabotage that.

6970s are selling for $360
580s are selling for $500

I suppose they could put out a $900 card sporting two 580s, but who believes they will do that ?

I think its all about the CROWN man, these cards are super high end, people with that kind of money don't really care about price IMHO.

If history repeats itself the AMD card should go for 699 and the nvidia card might be 10 % faster for 100$ more.

Crown or not, they are looking to make money. It's an incredulous thought that in order to put out the fastest card a company would force themselves to drive down the price of their highest margin consumer card by $100.

I think you misunderstood my post.

Forget the overclock and just read up on how powertune works, that should clear up some confusion.
http://www.anandtech.com/show/4061/amds-radeon-hd-6970-radeon-hd-6950/7

Unless we all got trolled and these are fake slides. Again.

The most interesting slide for me is the one showing near 100% scaling using two of these cards.

If this turns out to be true that will change the game for the best possible setup unless nvidia can improve their quad scaling as well.

My question to that slide is why could they not bring that scaling to four 6970s in quadfire, unless the scaling goes beyond drivers to the hardware implementation of the 6990.

So best case senerio, put powertune on +20% and switch to 2nd bios and overclock. right? Thats where the 450 watts comes from.
You are forgetting the higher voltages and thats not in games, but in something like furmark, but essentially, you are right.

Or they could go the route they did with the gtx295 - use all the shaders but cut down the memory interface. But anyways, is chiphell and Napolean the same site that Silverforce used for all his 6970 destroying the hd5970 claims and also your assertions that the 6970 would be the fastest single gpu or were those rumors from page hit grabbing sites that were being repeated?

So, did you end up picking up one those GTX 475s back in November, or what ? ():)
