Why doesnt a union exist for the benefit of programmers and other technology workers? I mean, we are pretty abused when it comes to work, just look at all that EA stuff going on now. We need a group to make sure that we get reasonable hours and pay.

What do you think?

Sure, but it won't happen. too disorganized.

big national unions generally start with a few large unions, ie. large companies with lots of people doing the same thing.
uh. i forgot where im going with that.

Exactly... how could you ask for better benefits, higher pay, and job security? It'd be a no brainer for companies. Pay even more that currently for inefficient workers? And I cant imagine anyone not buying software because they used non-union workers, or people buying software just because they used union workers... IT just isnt that kind of field.

How are we abused again? I work 40 hrs tops, for good wages and benefits, 401k matching, stock purchase plan, and company even pays for my continuing education.
If someone is abused, it's because they let themselves be abused, because they can't find a better job or too dumb to realize that they can.
Tech industry is about the individual's worth, not group's worth. It's all about individuals learning different skills and bringing them to the table and competing in the marketplace of ideas. Unions are going to destroy the tech industry like they are doing to the US auto industry.

Well, I see what you mean... and the place where I am is not that bad... just long work days for little money.

But the place I worked before here that got me thinking about this, I got paid badly, worked 50+ hours a week no overtime, no benefits, no matching 401k, and no money for education. So I left. But there are still people working there who are getting screwed.

It's not always a matter of people letting themselves get abused. It's not exactly possible to just leave your job and find a new one whenever you want...

If it's not, then you got the best job you can get.
