Technology makes porn easier to access at work

answer the polls honestly............. :D

More than a decade after employers began cracking down on those who view online pornography at work, porn is continuing to create tension in offices across the nation ? in part because laptop computers, cellphones and other portable devices have made it easier for risk-takers to visit such websites undetected.

Devices providing wireless access to the Internet appear to be giving the porn-at-work phenomenon a boost even as employers are getting more aggressive about using software to block workers' access to inappropriate websites. About 65% of U.S. companies used such software in 2005, according to a survey by the American Management Association and the ePolicy Institute, up from 40% in 2001.

Many employers say that because it's so easy to access porn on portable devices ? even those that are company-owned and outfitted to block access to adult-oriented websites ? they are increasingly concerned about being sued by employees who are offended when co-workers view naughty images.

With wireless devices, close monitoring of workers is "impossible. There's nothing you can do," says Richard Laermer, CEO of the public relations firm RLM. "Liability is the thing that keeps me up at night, because we are liable for things people do on your premises. It's serious. I'll see somebody doing it, and I'll peek over their shoulder, and they'll say, 'I don't know how that happened.' It's like 10-year-olds. And it's always on company time."

Through the years, surveys have indicated that many workers run across adult websites or images while at work, but few say they have done so intentionally.

I think these are most common practices which I have seen. There are many people who see porn while on work.

I don't see the issue here.

Internet-->Firewall-->Proxy Server(with blocking software)-->Switches-->WAPs = no porn for anyone

Group Policy forces the use of the Proxy Sever. Firewall is configured to only accept port 80 requests from the IP of the Proxy. No porn, EBay, Gambling, YouTube or MySpace here, Bubba. :p

That's some of what I do at work. Keep the porn out of my network. Any company that has porn or anything else they don't want eating their bandwith needs to hire new SysAdmins. :cool:

ps
Of course, Anandtech is not blocked. Gee, how'd THAT get overlooked? :confused:

even w/ all the blocking... just slap your porn on your ipod touch and boom, it's time to confiscate phones as you enter the building. and every other portable media device.

with that said, I think it's silly for people so sue over this. Sure, go ahead and get someone in trouble, they really shouldn't be doing that at work (unless you happen to work in porn). It's their risk to do it, but it seems like a waste of resources to manage. It seems like everyone is offended by every little thing these days. And they feel like they should sue.

When backing up our Dean's laptop I found his porn stash and notified my boss, who verified that it wasn't kiddie, surreptitiously backed it up for his own us (he later told me), and didn't mention it to the Dean. I doubt the Dean watched or downloaded it at work (he's a busy guy) & assume that he watches it either at home or while traveling to conferences. Heh, I don't think it's really that bad if he rubs one out with school property while at some hotel. I mean, at least he isn't charging porn to his hotel room, or getting a hooker with school money.

Zero tolerance for porn here at work. Oddly, we still have people let go, even though the policy has been in effect for years.

Why the hell would you risk your $75-100K/yr salary to see some clam at work? :confused:
