Technology demos, benchmarks, screensavers

Alright, I know about the demos here:
http://www.ati.com/developer/demos.html

And here:
http://www.nzone.com/object/nzone_downloads_nvidia.html

One question about those - are the new demos specific to the video card manufacturer? So if I have a nvidia card, will the new ati demos work on my system?

Now back in the day before voodoo1, there were all sorts of guys in europe that would make 3d demos. One in particular was about 5 minutes long and followed a spaceship flying around a 3d world while playing techno music (at the time, there weren't many 3d games, so it was the coolest thing). Where are these guys today? Do people still make stuff like that for fun?

Also, I saw a screensaver or demo, or something like that, that I've been trying to find. It was a 3d rendered ocean scene during a storm, and I believe there was a tornado and lightning. It looked great and had to be fairly new since it was running quite slowly on a mid-range computer (but much smoother on the expensive one). Anyone seen that?

I'm interested in this stuff now since I just bought a geforce 6800 (not delivered yet), and want to see what it can do 🙂 I've downloaded 3dmark05 in preparation (I can't run it with my geforce4), and a few other benchmarking programs. Are there any other eye-candy, 3d screensaver, or benchmarking programs that I should be getting?
