Technical question regarding a new Dell 8400

Ordered a new Dell 8400 for a friend, opened it up and found the dvdrom drive with just the power connection and ide connection. No audio cables connected to it. Now, it's been awhile since I got a new system. Is this normal? I haven't started it up since I was just going to inspect for damage and if all is fine, drop it off at his home. Is sound routed through the ide cable or did Dell screw up? If I remember correctly, I have an audio cable from my dvd-rw drive to my sound card. Is one not needed in the Dell?

One hasn't been needed for a very long time on any computer. Almost all drives will do the digital audio out over the IDE cable. It's been a very long time since I used an audio cable on a CD or DVD drive.

If you look under device manager in the properties for your CD and DVD drives, you'll likely see a check box for enabling digital audio. If your drive has that check box available, you don't need the cable.

Thanks, no I haven't started up the system yet, just checked it for damage and loose connections. I guess I'm behind the times a bit. I'll have my friend check the device manager for the enabled audio.
