Wet Weekend (Jan 07 2008)

Lots of weather in the Bay Area over the weekend, leading to many power outages. Luckily our project was not affected.

The new pseudo-random nature of our workunit creation finally worked itself out, and we were sending data at a relatively even pace. Speaking of sending data... At the end of last week my suspicions were confirmed: the router between us and our ISP (a Cisco 2811) has been CPU bound for who-knows-how-long, thus causing an artificial 60 Mbit/sec cap on our outbound packets. Further research will determine whether we can improve its performance or if we need to procure a better router.

We had an assimilator get jammed on a broken result. I had to delete the result to clear the pipes. This happened once before a week or two ago. A little detective work this morning uncovered that both such broken results were processed by optimized clients. I'm just sayin'. This could easily be a conincidence.

Spent a large chunk of the day trying to coax another Intel-donated server to life. We've gotten a lot of stuff from Intel recently, all in varying states of functionality (some missing CPUs, some have test boards, etc.). This particular one (4 2.66GHz CPUs, 8 GB RAM) was dead in the water for a while as it wouldn't respond to any keyboard/mouse. However, the other day I noticed one of the front-side fan modules wasn't seated properly. I adjusted it, and now the server sees all input devices. It's still a little squirly, but may be a worthwhile web server after all. We're calling it "maul" (sticking to the current "darth" theme). I'll announce it again if it actually proves to be ready for prime time.

Appart for Anandtech's stats, it shows how much more/less than Anandtech.
Also shows based on Average Work Done how many days for Anandtech to overtake the team, or be overtaken by a team behind...

Thanks for the stats!

The weather here was quite bad for a while, we've still got rain in the forecast but not enough to worry any more. A few days ago it was almost scary though.

Flooding wasn't to bad, it was mostly wind. Bay area got around 4" rain and the mountains all got snow. Farther up in California, Chico/Redding area there were "hurricane force" winds, roughly 60-70mph, I drove home over the weekend and many freeway signs were down, and all the rest areas were closed from damage. Most of the houses on my street are now missing a good percent of the roof shingles. Lots of trees down.

A guy my dad works with was driving out to a ranch on a call and almost got squished by a truck that fell over in the wind. Truck was going opposite direction and blew over just after he passed by on the road.

I-5 between Oregon and California was closed for a while from snow (chains still required, no commercial trucks allowed atm) and last week Hwy 17 between Santa Cruz and San Jose was completely closed for a day from down power poles and trees.

Fun fun.

This happened: http://flickr.com/photo_zoom.gne?id=2166632772&size=m

I was trapped at home by fallen trees, but the worst part is that I had to shut all my home boxes but one (to watch the weather) off so not much crunching got done on Friday.

THAT hurt. ;)

I had one small tree let go in the yard, and lots of broken branches. I have some video I should upload. It got pretty crazy for California...

I heard it snowed on Hwy. 9 today

(for those wondering, this is a coastal highway in California that *rarely* sees snow.)
