Mushroom grow in air tight dark barns.
Pre heat the barn to 55C with steam for 24 hours, and disinfect it with 50/50 formamide/water to kill all bacteria.

Straw - 70~75%
Manure - 20~25% (horse, cow, pig, and could supplemented with chicken manure, but you have to lower the amount)
Soil - 5% (optional)

After the mushroom beds are prepair, seed pellet is spread then use steam to bring the temperature to 28C (8in of the materials above layered as mushroom bed).

Hold steam temperature at 28C for 10~12 days for frist bach, then 2nd bach the next consecutive day then, the 3th/last bach should finish between the 15~17 day. (complete cycle usually take 20~30 days from prepair to cleanup)

If temperature flucturate +/-1C for an hour you will lose 10% of the crop, and so on (you will compleatly loses the entire crop if the temperature flucturate more than +/-4C for 3~4hours).

The reason for growing mushroom in the dark, is because the mushroom are white due to lack of light. And, if mushroom is grown in the light they will be brown.

Sorry for the rant, but my very frist job was a tech at a mushroom farm.

Are they not grown in underground cavern/cavs also?

I had seen a show once that showed them being harvested in caves.

Sundog - Barns are like "artificial caves". Mushroom will grow any where that have the ideal condition for them, be it caves or barns, etc... Cave are hard to come by therefor barns are often use. There are many variety of mushroom and there are many more we haven't discovered. Some mushrooms will grow in cave other mushrooms grow in moss, tree, leaves, rock, and some are grown & harvest by ants & termites.
