Technet - Get Windows 7 + Office 2010 Cheap?

Someone backup my math here and tell me what I'm missing.

If I am buying Windows 7 Ultimate and office 2010 Professional when they come out this year...why do I not just buy a Technet subscription now?

Preordered Win 7 Pro - $100
+ Uprgade price to Ultimate - $? (may even skip this step)
+ Office 2010 Pro Upgrade - $250?

Total - > $350

So a Technet Plus Direct subscription can be had for $240 on Amazon.com...from what I understand, this gets you a free copy of Windows 7 Ultimate and Office 2010 (when it's released later this year).

So for those of us that will be buying both...why wouldn't I just buy a Technet direct subscription now and I'll be saving money and getting the product early?

Am I missing something here? Would this not work?

Also, when the Technet subsciption runs out in 1 year, will I have any trouble re-activating Win7/Office2010 using the product key I had gotten? (I'm assuming no)

Actually, Technet product keys still work after the 1 year subscription -- you just can't download ISO images or request additional product keys.

The catch is that

Software is licensed for evaluation purposes only?not for use in production environments.

If you want a no-strings-attached license that you can use for anything, instead of just pre-deployment evaluation, get regular licenses.

Thanks for the info. I had seen this while diving into their fine print. Fortunately, it doesn't really apply to me and I'm wanting a single license for my home PC.

I'm thinking I'm going to sign up.... 🙂

smart move. That's what I did. That being said, I haven't taken advantage of my technet sub YET😀

Evaluation in a non-productive environment? I joined after attending a Microsoft Seminar - it was touted by MS as a device for IT managers to evaluate software and create distribution plans, etc. It was also highly recommended for home users with multiple computers. I am in my second year. The apps and keys are genuine and do not expire.

I am in my second year. Member ship renewal after the 1st year is only $250. Well worth it.

Same here. I took advantage of the $199 offer last year and didn't hesitate to renew the subscription this year for $250.

I am not sure what you do, but generally new hardware and software is run outside your live production environment for testing prior to deployment.

TechNet lets you try before you buy with a full-blown version.

It's not meant to be used for a home-user's day to day machine or a business' customer facing/production machines.
