Here's the specs on what I'm gonna be upgrading to...

Motherboard
MSI K7Master-S. Notables about this board; AMD761 Chipset, 266MHz FSB, Onboard Ultra160 SCSI, DDR-memory

CPU
Tbird 1.2GHz (266MHz FSB)

Memory
2- 256mb PC2100 DDR

Graphics
Geforce2 Pro

Hard Drive
2- Seagate 36Gb Cheetah Ultra160 10,000rpm SCSI drives (Already got these badboys)

And of course I'll be bringing over my 'old' TDK 12/10/32 CDRW drive and 'old' Toshiba 12/40 DVD drive. Since like 1/2 of the things I list aren't even out yet...By the time they are, prices will have come down some more! GODDAMN! This is a good time for us tech consumers!

With this system, I'm gonna be able to surf the web like a madman!

Ya know, I was pretty hard pressed to decide which Graphics Card to go with (almost bought the Geforce2 GTS, then almost bought a Radeon 64mb). But I'm gonna go way of the Geforce2 Pro, it's 64mb of 5.0ns DDR and drivers are more frequently updated than ATI (as far as Win2k goes). So by the time I'm ready to buy, it should be down in the sub-$200 range.

One thought though- have you considered buying PCI SCSI card instead of getting a mobo with it onboard? That way when you upgrade you dont have to pay for the SCSI controller again.

I'll let the pricing on the Mobo make my decision. If it's $250 or below, I'm getting it (since the 29160 card I would've gotten goes for around $180 just for the card)

By the time I outgrow this Mobo, HOPEFULLY the prices will have come down on Ultra160 adapters enough to make not getting the card initially negligable.

its definitely a top of the line system, but is it worth paying the premium for the newest components? If you're gonna surf the web, I'm sure an athlon 900 based system would be fine. or something of that nature. If you're into gaming, that should be fine too...I guess I may be trying to convince myself that my athlon 800 isn't obsolete yet but i get good fps in counterstrike ... thats what counts

Hehe, that remark about using my machine for websurfing was a joke dude. I'll be using my machine for Web pages (photoshop), video editing, games, and perhaps some 3D rendering.

I have yet to ever touch 3d studio max or whatever ... but hey...its your money, and if it will make you happy, I say that's what counts

If/When pressed, there's ABSOLUTELY NOTHING wrong with my current 700MHz Tbird system as it is. And as a matter of fact it does the job, for what I use my machine for, FINE AND DANDY!

Hmm.. since you are doing a lot of rendering and photshop, would prolly make more sense to go with a 2x1000 P3 SMP, will show a greater performance in redering and roughly the same in games (the video card will become the bottleneck)
