When Doom 3 arrived, the 6800 GT put the smack down on the X800 Pro and even showed up the more expensive Radeon X800 XT Platinum Edition.

I know I make all my purchases based on Doom III, one of the most overhyped and boring games of 2004.

they probably also read the forums and see how many ppl have prbs. with MSI, and don't with Abit :)

I remember someone here complained once when an MSI got an award similar to this, and claimed they have had nothing but problems with their board, as have others, etc.. Who knows, just a thought.

hm they must use really bad equipment to test sound cards, the a2 isn't even close to the fidelity of the envy based soundcards. :disgust:

EXACTLY! Why didn't they give it to the X800 XT PE, it layed the smack down on every nvidia card when HL2 arrived, which was more anticipated than doom3 and much more highly rated...

I'm sure if you and Todd look around hard enough, you will find a site that did award the X800XTPE the best of 2004. Then you'll both be satisfied. So run children run!!!! Dig, Dig, Dig... You will find what your looking for.

I don't really care about finding a site that awarded that card victory, I just hate to see them award the nvidia card based on a game that sucked and isn't a benchmark for video card performance. In the benchmarks you will see ATI cards have a greater performance gain over nvidia in HL2 than nvidia has over ati in doom3. That says something to me. And then look at all the other games. Really, the winner is whoever makes a card that does better at the games you play, which for me is ATI. I don't play any games that nvidia does better at, which makes me perfectly happy :)

Ok guys, enough of the fighting. Both cards are nice, but both have flaws. NV runs Doom 3 the best (therefore laying the smackdown on ATI cards), but Doom 3 being one of the biggest dissappointments of this year (according to most people, not to me) NV doesn't win much here.

Radeon's X800XTPE is probably the best single card available now, but then again, it's not really available, so ATI doesn't win much either.

X800XT beating the 6800GT in HL2? NAW!?? We're comparing a 400 dollar card with a 600 dollar, non-existant card here, let's be fair. The 6800GT stomped the X800Pro, the X800XT stomped the 6800Ultra. There.

I see. Your taking the guys comment and turning it into "The victory was based entirely on DoomIII" spectacle. He just mentioned one game that the card reaaallly excels at. He just mentioned it. He just mentioned it. He just mentioned it. Umm, oh yeah, He just mentioned it.

And whether or not you realize it, you fall in with the "trendy" crowd when you say D3 sucks. It sucks to you? Thats great. I can accept that you don't like it. But you damn well better accept that I do. I don't care about anyone else. It's just you and me bud. I like it, you don't. That's 50/50 right there.

/fixes necessary, but broken record.

The award was for high-end graphics card. The x800XT is better than a 6800GT, heck the 6800GT isn't even the best nvidia has. The award was retarded to begin with, but they made it worse saying it's better than ATI because it beat them in a game that not only wasn't very good to begin with, it isn't a game that benchmarks video cards. There is no comparison here at all, the whole thing is stupid. It's not even a matter of who's better, it's a matter of a stupid review.

And I'm not falling into some "trendy" crowd when I say D3 sucks. I've been saying D3 sucks since the alpha leaked. The game looked like crap to me all along, and it did not disappoint when it was released. It had some cool things, sure, but there were glaring issues and boring repetitive gameplay that kept it from being anything close to game of the year.

We have ample stocl of XT-PEs over here in the UK, tho its only in the Powercolor brand only. And the only 6800U that they have in stock are Gainwards. So i wouldnt say one is better at the other in terms of availability.

Uh, I don't think they're basing it on Doom 3 so much as the fact that NV40 has equal performance, newer technology, higher precision, etc....

I think the 6800GT won because it offers the most bang for the buck in the high end segment....end of story?

Guess I'm used to reviews giving awards to highest performance period.

The X800Pro at least ties the 6800GT in HL2 according the head-to-head by Anad. Hate to nit pick, but...

My original comment was not about the 6800GT getting the award, I can care less, they did not have to comment about Doom III though, it just reminded those of us who wasted money on it. Why not use Tomb Raider: Eternal Darkness instead?

Doom III is a piss poor game, but great marketing device for Nvidia. If you like Doom III congrats, but the people bashing it are those who bought it based on half-assed reviews that only drooled over the graphics and the consumer found out how bad the gameplay was after dropping $55. Word of mouth >> marketing hype. HL2 will sell 5x more than Doom III and id will once again be reminded that gameplay trumps fuzzy shadows or dynamic lighting. We can only hope Valve sees more engine sales and expansion money. How many games has id released where we shoot zombies and demons? Enough already.

the 6800GT won because it has been more widely available for a longer period of time, setting the standard. the x800xt wasn't released until later after the pe version turned into vapor. I have to agree, nVidia deserves kudos for getting the GT out of the starting gate. And it outperformed the pro under most conditions. YES, the XT kills it, but it was only widely available a month or two ago.

And so because everyone expected it to be the "game of the year" and wasn't, it now sucks?

And where in that article did they say what I bolded above? This is Anandtech Forums, not MadLibs.

I expected Doom III to be bad, most id games are. I bought it anyway (reviews were good) and the game was bad. I had low expectations and it still stunk. I had horrible expectations for Far Cry and was mildly surprised. Maybe it's time to stop apologizing for id and there crappy games. They make good engines, but Carmack need to let Opengl die for Windows gaming.

And pray tell, what kind of creatures are we shooting at in HL2? I recall a zombie or two.
And isn't Quake 4 based on the D3 engine? Dude, your "points" don't have any merit when they can be used just as easily in an argument against you.

Yeah, Call of Duty isn't worthy of the term OpenGL.
It's only one of the most popular games out there right now.

Oh and QuakeIII was absolutely terrible, nobody ever played that game.

If only they werent OpenGL, maybe they could have been contenders.

Oh.......brother.....

"Dude" WTF are you talking about, where did I mention Q4?

OMG there were zombies in HL2? There were also a dozen other types of enemies and *gasp* a story to back it all up. I asked EB about the Doom 3 trade in value, it was like $7 a few months ago. Nuff said.
