teardrop tattoo - significance?

I'm sure you know what I'm referring to. However, does it signify that YOU have killed someone, or you KNOW SOMEONE who has been killed? I have heard both ways, can anyone clarify? Saw some retards at the mall with 2 or 3 of them, got me thinking.

It's not on snopes, because it isn't an urban legend. It has some kind of gang significance, I just am not clear on what it is.

From what I know, the tear drop never had anything to do with the person actually killing someone. If you are a cold blooded killer why would you get a tear drop put on your cheek. At least from what I know the tear drop had to do with someone close to you dying, and the closed drop ment it was a family member and an open one ment it was a gang member. Of course there were millions of exceptions where gang members considered a fellow member family and it ended up a closed tear.

I'm sure its different from place to place though.
