For the lazy people read below:

Itagaki talks Xbox 360

Team Ninja guru also further confirms that Microsoft will make a major announcement in Japan later this month.
In an interview published in the latest issue of Famitsu Xbox Magazine, Tecmo producer and Team Ninja head honcho Tomonobu Itagaki talked more about his impressions of the Xbox 360. When asked about the console's triple-core IBM PowerPC processor design, Itagaki called it a "buffed-up Sega Saturn," as the old console was also multiprocessor, coming with two 32-bit CPUs. He said that a single-CPU machine is easier for programming, but multicore structures have become the recent trend.

"The Xbox 360 is said to be a machine that's easy to develop for, but that's because it has a good lineup of middleware and infrastructure. So it should be easy to create something that's up to a certain level [of quality]. But if you try to take advantage of the Xbox 360's full hardware specs, you'll find out about the difficulty in programming for a multicore machine," said Itagaki.

"The Xbox 360 has enough power without all the cores going into use. Even if just a single core is used for a game, it will still be several more times powerful than machines up until now. But we aren't satisfied at that kind of a level. Our programmers are having fun playing around with the machine. They're swinging around all the cores and making a game that shows the powers of the Xbox 360."

Itagaki said that the Xbox 360's 512MB of main memory is more than enough for games, but he feels that the machine's media might bring up some problems. He said he would have preferred Microsoft to adopt the high-capacity HD-DVD format, but he said that, given the next-gen disc format wars, he could live with Microsoft's decision.

"Another reason why [Microsoft] went with the 9GB DVD format (dual-layered DVDs can contain up to 9.4 GB) is that American and European developers tend to use real-time rendered cutscenes. But Japanese developers use a lot of prerendered cutscenes, so the DVD format brings a bit of an anxiety. The screen resolution for Xbox 360 games will be in high definition, so the prerendered movies are going to be pretty large. If we encoded the Dead or Alive 4 trailer from E3 in high definition in a quality acceptable to us, it will easily be about 2GB. With DOA4, we'll be using the disc's capacity to its full extent. We started development on DOA4 pretty early, and we didn't know what disc format the Xbox 360 was going to adopt. So when we learned about it, we were really knocked out."

Itagaki also revealed that the DOA4 demo trailer shown during the Electronic Entertainment Expo was actually done with an alpha development kit for the Xbox 360. He said that his team received Xbox 360 beta kits very recently and was having fun with them.

The Team Ninja head also further confirmed that Microsoft is planning a major announcement in Japan this month. "We're currently thinking of whether we should create a new trailer for the upcoming Xbox 360 announcement in July, or if we should go straight ahead to work on the completion of the game," he said. "We'll play around with the beta kit for a little bit more and decide."

When Famitsu Xbox said to Itakagi that fans were afraid that Team Ninja could end up abandoning the Xbox 360 after the release of Sony's PlayStation 3, he commented, "Team Ninja will not disappoint their fans." Itagaki added, "To be honest, we're too busy on the development of DOA4 to think about anything else."

When asked for his opinion on the PlayStation 3, Itagaki commented that he respects the fact that Sony is trying to "create a computer that comes from Japan." However, he also added that he hopes Sony will make a machine that actually runs according to its listed hardware specs. "A machine that doesn't run according to its promised CPU frequency is out of the question," he said.

A single Cell processor is faster than 5 AMD Opterons clocked at 3Ghz, blah blah blah....

I don't care what they're saying. Xbox was going to walk your dog and paint your house too....

Also, who the hell cares about fighting games?

Notice how he said it's more powerful than machines up until now. But that can mean Xbox and PS2, or computers today.

But after watching the Official Trailer 1 for the game I could care less if xbox 360 or ps3 are 1000x slower than PCs today. The game looks more beautiful than 99.9% of PC titles to date.

I would never be so cruel as to expose my friends to something like that and call it entertainment. Any "friend" who did that to me would be immediately banned from my property.

Fightning games are crap. And games don't really need 2 gigs of useless prerendered video anyway. Furthermore, you can always ship 2 discs if needed.

MAKE MORE NINJA GAIDEN GAMES!

I have a feeling it will come with the HD-DVD drives but its not necessary. I have been wathing HD movies on standard DVD-9 for about 9 months now.

Itagaki is usually a pretty entertaining interview and Team Ninja seems to know how to stretch the xbox hardware quite nicely. Say what you will about the Dead of Alive series but they are very nice looking games though gameplay wise its not even close to Virtua Fighter 4: Evolution.

As for "who cares about fighting games"..I do if its good. They dont make many good ones anymore as the Street Fighter series is about dead and the SNK stuff is typically rehashed stuff.

I'd rather see another Ninja Gaiden game from Team Ninja over another DOA game...though a part of me would love to see another Rygar!

DoA has always been graphically nice but has always kinda sucked fighting wise. Fighting games have been stagnating a while IMHO. They need something that will freshen it up. Maybe the next Virtua Fighter will do it. Never was a big fan of Tekken although Soul Caliber and it's sequels were good.

Notice how Itagaki laid the smack on Sony and their overhyped specs. I'd say the same holds true in the opposite direction with Nintendo's Revolution. My eyes tend to glaze over when Sony lists specs and it's kind of funny to see the fanboys(or girls) scream like little b_tches. Does anyone here seriously think the dual monitor 1080p support from Sony will make a difference to 99.99999999% of the game buying population even 5 years from now? That would mean that people have two 1080p capable HDTV's in their living room or wherever in the house.

I think the Revolution will make or break Nintendo. They need to produce a system that is very powerful but they don't need the most powerful hardware. Just one that isn't perceived to be vastly inferior to the other two. They need to market it correctly and to whatever the controller is like, it better be dang good or even die hard fans of Nintendo like myself will have to finally conclude that it's time to throw in the towel.

Nintendo's decision on HD content isn't looking good in the marketing and perception area. They would have been wise to support at least 720p. I don't think they need to support 1080i or 1080p as most people in the next few years who buy HDTV's will most likely get a 720 resolution TV. I don't even know of a HDTV that isn't in the multi thousand dollar range that supports 1080.

Have you guys seen this?

The Xbox 360 and the PS3: late bloomers or complete failures?

Sure, it will take time to adjust to the multi-core goodness that PS3 and Xbox360 offer, but which is correct?

The most ironic bit of it all is that according to developers, if either manufacturer had decided to use an Athlon 64 or a Pentium D in their next-gen console, they would be significantly ahead of the competition in terms of CPU performance.

or

The Xbox 360 has enough power without all the cores going into use. Even if just a single core is used for a game, it will still be several more times powerful than machines up until now.

Also:

At another point in the article, Anand claims that the Xbox 360's CPU will deliver only about twice the performance of the original Xbox's 733MHz Intel CPU. Can things really be this bad?

I guess only developers would know since they are the only ones who are working with the platforms in a design capacity. It's also important to note that just because Xbox360 or PS3's games look superior to the last generation it doesn't mean that the CPUs have much to do with it.

I think it's entirely possible to say that the CPU in the Xbox360 is so much better and that developers are having fun playing with them just to get people excited in the platform. Not that many people will notice the difference anyway. Even if that's not correct the average person will see a huge improvement in graphics and think "wow, that tripple core IBM PowerPC CPU really is amazing!"

I love Ninja Gaiden and If there is a one for the Xbox 360 it would a enough reason to buy an XBOX!

Oh really? a PPC in order CPU is more powerfull than an A64 superscalar out of order processor?, not a chance. The A64 at 2GHz whips an OOO PPC at 3GHz, imagine the poor in order PPC. It is an abuse.
I think when he refers to "actual machines" , he doesn't include the actual PCs (which are much more powerfull than next gen consoles, talking about CPU power), only gaming consoles like PS2, Xbox and GC.
