Unless you were dealing with trade scammers, they were secure in that there were no remote code exploits associated with them. Allegedly some remote code exploits HAVE been identified thanks to the source code leak. We don't know if Valve has changed that recently - the source code leak was from just after Jungle Inferno hit.

edit: there was a buffer overflow vulnerability in older builds that were patched before anyone exploited it. Security researchers found that one.

I'm more interested in the mods and ports that these games could have now that the source code is in the wild. CS:GO on the Nintendo Switch, anyone?

Nothing like that is going to be legal. You might see some unlicensed freeware based on this code on PC, but that's about it.

edit: Valve claims the game as hosted on their servers is "safe":

They kinda left open the possibility of security problems by saying that they haven't yet found any problems from a review of the leaked source. Other independent reviews claim that RCEs are possible, even on Valve servers. I would not play right now if I were you.

Apparently Valve is saying that only a build of CS:GO was leaked. Not TF2. So while CS:GO RCEs are possible, TF2 is less-likely unless it's embedded into shared engine code.

Last time I played TF2 late last year, the servers were pretty much dead. There were only a handful of public servers listed and most of the people spent all their time dancing. Going from TF2 back in 2007/2008 era to what it is now is pretty sad. Robin went overboard once they found out how profitable cosmetics can be. The last game I played before uninstalling it was an arena match and the moment I killed two other players, my own team initiated a vote-kick on me and said I was being a tryhard for killing the enemy team.

It's not really like that in the casual matchmaking servers. If you play on community servers, I could see that happening. The casual scene is a bit better, and I've had some good matches during the Covid-19 lockdown, though that was briefly interrupted by the lagbots that were crashing Valve servers. Still get a lot of aimbots, but most of the players have been trained well-enough that they can identify and kick those bots efficiently.

There is a really bad Heavy exploit that gives Heavy near-infinite HP regen that needs to be patched. You can't kill Heavy except via charged headshots or backstabs once the exploit is activated. I haven't encountered it, but news of the exploit is spreading.
