and to think, she was a cobol programmer (punchcards) back in the early 70's..... Haha, she didnt get the whole erase a cdrw concept, she said i was making it up...

Anyone else have incompetent parents? 😀

I didnt even bother to show my mom the cdrw part. I just showed her how to burn a CD-R and Make audio cds, mp3, and her own custom cds.

My mom had trouble moving the mouse not too long ago. Then I left my laptop home this semester and she got into Solitaire and now she's an expert. 😀

arg, yes. everytime i go home...it's doing this, it's doing that. my mom just stays away, my dad calls me and doesn't know how to explain the problem.

She's not "incompetent" she's probably just burned out from trying to toilet train you and teaching you to
walk upright instead of on all four's

I'm by no means an expert on computers, but I probably know more than my dad. He actually knows a lot (for the last two years since he retired from the military, he's been taking classes full time at a local tech college, working to get his certification for network admin, etc.) more than most people his age do. My mom has no clue. She thinks Gator is the greatest program you can download.

She also insists that the tower of their computer is the "hard drive." My dad knows a bit, but when I'm home, he's always asking me how to work his programs, etc.

She didnt do a very good job, i still pee on the seat :Q

My dad once said my sinus infections were caused by looking at the computer monitor too often...also, back in the Windows 95 days, whenever an error message popped up (as the occassionally did 😉 ) he'd yell at me, thinking I caused them somehow.
"Windows just messed up. It does that once and a while. Click ok."
"But how do I make it stop?!"
"It's just a bug, dad. Click OK."
"BUT IT'S NOT OK!!!"

Usually, at that point, I'd just grab the mouse, click ok, say "there." and leave.

Sad thing is, my dad's an electrical engineer.

my mom is pretty good with the computer. She used to work with DOS all the time (back in the day), and she minored in some computer field back when she finished college in 1990. Maybe I'll ask her 🙂

But he's right. It's not OK. 😛

MUHAHA!😀 Be sure you tell that to your mom.

Let's see... My mom's pretty good at basic stuff; she's a secretary and works with Office and such all the time, so she should be. My dad, on the other hand, is one of these people who's afraid that they'll launch missles against somebody if they push the wrong key, ala Wargames (anybody remember that movie? Something about a kid - who is now one of the guys on friends - hacking into government computers). I've got my grandparents to deal with too, although they do surprisingly well, considering that this is theire first computer ever. I just drop by once a week or so to see if they're having any problems, and sometimes I have to try and explain something. not too bad.

Boy...where do I begin with this one? Do you know the definition of incompetence? It is one thing to have the knowledge and or training of a subject or job and continuously screw things up.

It is completely different to not have the base training or knowledge, and no be able to do something properly. I am sure there are many things that your mother can do effortlessly that you would not be able to do well or at all. Does that make you incompetent?

Yah, everytime I hear "Well I was a <insert old programming language here> programmer way back, so I should be able to understand this...." I just have to laugh. There are a few people I goto school with that are in their 60's and are trying to programming PHP and MySQL..... not so successfully.

btw, my parents are incompetent with their computer too... I get a call everytime one of them locks it up and I just tell them to hit the reset button.

My mom uses the CDRW because I have her a DirectCD I think it's called...made by Roxio Easy CD Creator, so that it's a CDR yet you can save changes to files on it through Explorer, or the programs themselves....I never showed her anything else about the CDRW, because she doesn't have a USE for it! lol

Hehe.... My mom love playing small games on the computer (or the SNES, she loves Mario 🙂). My dad on the other hand, can fix any electronics but dont know how to use a mouse! 😀

Please try removing the stick from your butt before replying next time 😉

hmm.... my parents are fairly bad. My mom's not that bad, but my dad just gets frustrated. He doesn't understand that Win98 just doesn't like to run for days on end, and that its user-switching interface is shoddy at best.

Next time I go home, I'm upgrading the RAM and processor, and installing WinXP. Then most of the crap will disappear.

My in-laws called me over to their house a few weeks ago because their printer wasn't working. They wanted me to take a look at it and fix whatever was wrong.

I put some paper in the tray and went back home.

I was explaining a "tif" file to someone the other day and I told them they could open it in "paint." They said "whats paint" and I about lost it

My dad can do far more than I can do (which isn't saying much, everyone on these forums can do more than I can do), but he does know more than your average person on the street. I figure that between my dad and my xbf, I'm set for computer help if I ever need it. My mom knows how to use the things, but I swear she's a jinx. If she walks into the room, our dial-up goes down, no ifs, ands, or buts about it, it just spontaneously combusts.
