Read this article about teachers and school officals recommending drugs.
article

So many teachers barely know how to teacher their own subject let alone recommend such drugs.

That's a tough one. I've been teaching for 22 years now and I've had some kids who couldn't function when they were on ritalin because it just knocked them out, and others who couldn't function without it in a regular classroom setting. Every person is different. I think it is prescribed too often and much too young, but sometimes it is absolutely necessary for some students to remain in a regular classroom. For the record, I can say that I have only told one student's parents that he absolutely needed to continue with ritalin.

I ahve known teachers that recommend stuff like that and don't know anythign while I have known some that are real smart and I would trust them. The bottom line is something that important should be decided by a doctor not a teacher.

I have had problems all my life in class rooms and teachers never recommended any of that stuff. I even had teachers tell me I am going to be nothing when I grow up right in front of class and hurt my feelings big time. This last November for various reasons the Dean of Students recommended that I see the college shrink. I tested positive for ADHD and Depression big time, and it makes erfect sense. I went to others to get a second opinion and they all agreed. I now have the meds and am doing much better. I decided not to take Ritalin do to side effects. I just feel that doctors should make the decision although teachers can recommend the kids get tested.

I am a 33 year old man, and i still take Adderall for ADHD. I do notice a big difference when I am off of it. I have a hard time concentrating.
