The sentence has little to do with her ultimate punishment.
It's the "lifetime sex offender registration" that's going to do her in. If she gets a boyfriend (or girlfriend) after her husband dumps her and decides to spend the night over, she's going to have to notify the local police. Everywhere she goes for the rest of her life, she will wear that Scarlet letter.
