seriously now.

i would understand if she were fired. (all the kids talking n making fun of her, and it undermines the authoretah of the teaching body)

i would understand if she was sent to couseling because well, she could get men of her own age. counseling which would easily re-instate her as a teacher.

but i dont see the criminal damage here. there's no tearful young girl left shattered by the abuse to an older predator; there's a young WINNER getting high fives from the whole school.

consensual acts should pretty much be legal across the board. generally, if someone says "could someone PLEASE commit this crime on me", you know you got the law wrong.

I really hope this was missing sarcasm tags...

Ridiculous, especially when you consider lot of people get less, or even no time, for murder.

I guess they really want to make sure her vagina is no longer going to be in working order at the end of the sentence.

Governments seem to get a hardon over putting people in jail though. Heck even in Canada it's going to get bad, Harper wants to build more jails and put more people in jail. Bill C-51 is going to help that happen. Jail should be reserved only for people that actually pose a threat to society like murderers, rapists, and repeat offenders of property damage and theft but not how the government sees it.

These teacher sex situations are usually with consent...not that it's ok... but it should not be regarded like rape. At very worse these teachers should lose their job. That's a big enough punishment on it's own.

A tidbit for you: sexual maturity != mental maturity. You've also conveniently sidestepped the abuse of power issue. And to extend your morality argument, we could do away with most of our laws if we apply that logic whenever we find it convenient. On a theoretical level, I agree with you. But that's all it is: theoretical. Unfortunately, we live in a complex reality. Welcome to it.

First, the teacher did wrong. However, how can we objectively decide 'mental maturity'? There are 40 year olds that are mature enough for sex.

Good question. There are one or two middle-aged mental midgets I've love to see spade or neutered.

'Murica, where sex is the greater sin.

So many comments about the punishments prescribed by the law being to severe. That's fine and its also easy to fix. Tell your elected representatives to change the law or vote for different ones who will. That is how it works. Unfortunately the vast majority of complainers do absolutely nothing to effect change. Instead of posting comments in an essentially anonymous internet forum get involved in your community, Speak to your elected officials, talk to your neighbors, or join an activist organization. It's about getting involved with your government. If you don't you should expect to be disappointed with what it does.

I didn't sidestep anything.

Mental maturity isn't even an issue when it comes to sexual maturity. Numerous cases of mentally handicapped individuals seeking and even going on to state that they enjoyed sexual encounters from their abusers over the years show that mental maturity means nothing when it comes to the biology of sex, just as much as the biology of sex means nothing when it comes to the sociology of sex.

And since you brought up the abuse of power issue, were you there when the two of them first encountered each other? Were you there when they first had sex with each other? Do you even know which one initiated the relationship (despite what statements and documents might claim)?

Your moral compass is set one way, that's fine, but just as with any opinion you're more than allowed to be as wrong as anyone else is morally.

Correct, the two are not at all connected, which was exactly my point. Your previous post hinged the issue on sexual maturity. My point is that reality is far more complex than "gee his hormones are ripe for reproduction and his dick works". Mental maturity is precisely what is behind the laws related to teacher-student / adult-minor sexual relationships. In fact, it's the entire premise behind the notion of statutory rape and one's ability to give legal consent, as well as the notion that minors cannot even enter into a legal contract.

It's the entire reason we even have the word "minor" to begin with. I'm sorry, but you don't get to just casually sweep that under the rug because it's inconvenient. As your position stands, it should be legal for a 40 year old teacher to have sex with a 14 year old boy so long as it can be proven that he's reached a physiological threshold of sexual maturity. I find that rather absurd because it grossly neglects all other elements that feed into one's decision to have sex. For instance, due to the very nature of his sexual maturity (read: sexual DRIVE) contrasted against his total lack of mental maturity, your average 14 year old cannot properly evaluate the risks/rewards of having sex. A hormonal 14 year boy is hardly equipped to make an intelligent decision and walk away from that situation... especially when it's his hot teacher who's been in a position to manipulate and seduce the hell out of him for as long as she so desires.

And since you brought up the abuse of power issue, were you there when the two of them first encountered each other? Were you there when they first had sex with each other? Do you even know which one initiated the relationship (despite what statements and documents might claim)?

I see... so because these statements and documents are also inconvenient, they go under the rug, too ;)

It's very reasonable to ascertain that she initiated contact given those very statements and documents, but I really don't care who initiated contact because it's neither here nor there due to all the reasons I articulated above. She's the teacher. He's the student. She's the adult. He's the 15 year old minor.

I guess if a 40 year old man has sex with a 14 year old girl and it can be proven that she "peaked early," they're good to go

You can't easily quantify mental maturity, but you can quantify age. Since there is usually a correlation between the two, we use one as the proxy for the other. Far from perfect, sure, but society decided to pick a number at which point the expectation is that someone is mature enough to make such decisions. That's the law on the books, and it's pretty clear.

No sympathy from me for that rapist.

wow and she's decent looking too, usually the women only get prison if they are ugly. wait, is she latino? she looks non-white, which may explain why she went to prison

glad they are at least being equally brutal to female cho-mos. if we are going to marginalize and punish people for life we should punish women that way too

edit:

judge catches it perfectly...
Grant said she received letters supporting Ronk, but none supporting the teen.

"They were all about you and what you were going through. Poor you," the judge told Ronk. "To ignore a crime and a victim and an ongoing involvement in school, outside school, in a car. You did something you shouldn't have done."
"

typical america feels so sorry for this child molester but only because she is a young woman, and they dont give a crap about the abused teenage boy

Thank god they are getting this riff raff off the street. Now they can work on real crimes like murder, CEO's stealing money, fraud, drugs and all you pot heads that think this is a real issue, but what will really happen is they'll go after another teacher banging a jr high kid, who would be banging 15 year olds if he could anyway.

Read the thread title, came in expecting a dude.

I still don't get it. These women must know that banging their students or anybody below the legal age of consent is going to get them in trouble. Any red blooded teenage boy is going to tell everyone they're shagging the hot teacher. Even in a best case scenario, they'll never be able to teach again.

being totally serious. i dont consider it a crime unless there is a damaged party. i dont consider it morally wrong either.

lets make a different example that doesnt involve sex.

back a few years there was the cannibal of dusseldorf if i recall correctly, some german guy who killed and ate his friend, at his friend's request.

ok, so i ("society") might get worried if some guy out there is willing to eat a person; this strikes me as a mental issue - "the guy must be crazy".

in the case of the teacher, she must be crazy because she having sex with someone way outside of her age range.

but in the case of the cannibal, i don't see the killing of the other guy as a crime. just as i support assisted suicide (omfg let's call it euthanasia, shall we?) and the right to choose your life and your death, i support the guy's right to decide to get killed and eaten if he wants to.

cannibalism is not something our species does. murder, on the other hand, is extremely popular - and in other species too. you'll find that the vast majority of other species (and mammals more so) do not practice cannibalism.

getting sex with young partners is something *everyone* does, we've bumped up the age of consent in the last 50 years because of a new wave of puritanism, but it's always been lower.

the "morally wrong" is subjective, and i choose to not subject myself to it.

he wanted to get off - she let him. there is no crying, no yelling "she abused me" involved, just a lot of smiles and happy people.

the selling and using of marihuana comes to mind. it's only a crime because the state decided it was (for dodgy reasons too), but i find it hard to spot a moral issue with it.

and while we are at it, sex has its own issues. like sticking your fingers in a plug or in a socket, they are similar, but have some BIG differences (namely, you die in one case, and not die in the other).

Girls can get pregnant form sex, men can't. Males tend to initiate courtships, females receive it. A female can be abusive of a male but in order to call it "rape" there needs to be actual rape involved; if i go to a hooker, give her fifty bucks, and have sex with it, it's ain't rape.

Genitals touching is not rape - assault (be it physical or, i accept in the case of young and easily influenced teens, psychological) to force an act where one person is not consenting, and which is based on the sexual wants of the predator, is rape.

Which is a discussion all in its own, since yeah ok, rape. But provoking a guy from Glasgow Rangers and getting your teeth smashed in and your bones broken to the point where you will be in pain for the rest of your life, is worse than rape.

Or maybe it isn't, right? Maybe the psychological aspects that FEMALES attach to rape is more important that the purely physical way that MALES approach it, which is the difference between a female teacher giving a 15you kid a handjob (praise be her name) and the pedobear running rampant in a nursery.

to answer you, i will answer him:

Because kids in school BEG for sex. And sometimes begging gets you something.

When i was in 11 grade i was all over, constantly, this english teacher i had, desperate to get my rocks off. Its what guys do when the hormones strike.

She always said no to my totally obvious and in no way possible to misunderstand approaches, but never no in a disgusted way because "women are people too".

Please do not forget the reality of our existence. The same way that a guy who get lots is a stud and a girl is a slut, when a guy pokes a minor he's a beast, when a girl does the same she's a saint.

i bet it actually doesnt get them in trouble much. the report rates for this kind of abuse is usually well under 50% anyway, and even then many schools will try to sweep this kind of abuse under the rug, and it is all too much easier to do so if its a woman abusing a male student. even if it is a male teacher abusing female students, the administration will usually do whatever it can to keep it from blowing up into a scandal.

i remember at my school it was a well known fact that at least two of the coaches regularly screwed female students. later came out that one of them was screwing male basketball players too... im sure there was 10x that much stuff going on that never came out

i think psychologically it is just really really immature women but who knows. they have to be mentally retarded or crazy to do it

I have to agree. It's certainly an imperfect system, and I'm very open to suggestions.

I was watching Forensic Files last night and this guy went to prison at 17 because, when he was 16, he accepted $1000 from a friend who wanted to borrow the family 12 gauge so he could kill his own father.

He was somewhere in his early 20's when the interview took place, and he was so incredulous at his 16 year old self for being blinded by the prospect of $1000. He could not compute how he made such a catastrophic decision and he's now haunted by the fact that he played a role in someone else's murder.

I'm not saying there's nothing wrong with him and that we're at risk of any 16 year old presented with $1000 becoming a murder risk, but still... mental maturity played a huge role.
