I know the very basics but would like to get better. What are some good resources for a starting player and any useful tips?

Read any book to get a good starting point (a feel for the odds and some general concepts), then after that play as many hands as you can. Nothing beats experience.

I'm personally of the opinion that the book doesn't matter, because you'll learn all the basics as well as the authors point of view. Then after actually playing you will unlearn everything except for the basics, which all books teach fairly equally.

Books: Harrington on Hold'Em series
Forums: Twoplustwo.com, PocketFives.com

But most importantly, put in hands. Play a ton online. For real money, fake money hands won't help you. You need to become accustomed to the game and become comfortable. Microlimits will help you, as you'll play against a bunch of grinders who are pretty good relative to the stake (which will help you).

Srsly, trust me. I'm a big winner online (SNG, a little cash). Posts like DayLaPaul might seem logical, as you can play a cash game as a newbie and win (variance, lol) but if you're interested in the long-term, you must learn strategy to be a winner.

PM me if you'd like details.

Just give me all your money. I'll teach you everything you need to know.

Don't worry about it... you'll win it all back. ;)

Download Bodog or full tilt poker and play in the play money rooms. You can play all day and learn what hands beat others. Of course, you don't always get realistic opponents when real money isn't at stake...but it's a place to start.
