Teach me about telneting

I have a Digi Portserver that lets you telnet into something over a network connection.

I need to test it out but since the last time I used telnet was 5 years ago to hack my Tivo, I'm a little rusty.

I have a Cisco 2600 that's basically a junker and I have no idea how it's configured. But this is my test device.

I want to telnet into the Cisco but am not even sure where to begin other than hooking up the console cable to my serial port and initiating telnet.

How do I know what address to telnet into?

Teach me like I'm an slow and dumb child. 😛

You don't telnet over serial cable, you need a terminal program like hyperterm, minicom, etc.

Telnet is a TCP/IP application so you need to know the destination IP.

If you just want to play around you can simply telnet into another machine (may need to enable the telnet service).

When using the console cable its not telnet. You will just use a terminal app and connect over Com1. Telnet is like the terminal connection over a network connection.

For a 2600 CONSOLE connection open hyperterminal or get one of the newer copies of putty and select serial. Pick your serial port and pick your rate settings. For the 2600 all you should have to change is the rate to 9600

Tell us what is connected to what and how.

Your digi terminal server can attach serially to other devices like the 2600 router console port. You would telnet to the digi, and from there telnet to one of it's serial lines - the 2600.
If you just want to get a terminal connection to the 2600 the follow posters above. It's not uncommon to have a large terminal server with serial connections to other network gear, but I'm not understanding what you're really trying to do.
