Teac or Lite-On?

The drives in question are the teac 42x(?) and the liteon 52x anyone haveeither of these? I would like one that is quite... speed isn't the utmost important factor. They are the same price... The other is the Burner category... both liton and teac are 40x12x48x cdrw quiet is better... thanks!

If teac's are not acually rebranded Lite-ons (it seems like everything is), then I'd go with Lite-On. All the Lite-On drives I've ever had have worked great.

I have two Lite-On 52X CDROMs (one in each system). No problem with either of them. As far as quiet...I haven't owned any 52X CDROM that didn't make a hum when spinning to access data. It seems like the normal sound to me. I also don't use my CDROM that often (not a big game player), mostly to install software. Hope this helps.

The gist of the few reviews I've seen of the 24X CD-RW drives is that the Lite-On was better for backups of a few rare games, and the Teac was more solidly built and had better results with sub-par media.

Dunno if this holds true for later drives. YMMV.

In any case I run a Teac CD-W524E in a Firewire enclosure. Works great with my XP box and my Mac. No complaints. Then again, I probably would do fine with a Lite-On as well. Build quality is not a huge issue since I use it rarely anyway now. I'm now mostly burning DVD-RAM or DVD-R. 4.3 GB discs are where it's at. 700 MB discs are so 20th century. 😉

I haven't had a teac but I love my liteon 24x. Between both of them you're probably at more risk of simply getting a defective unit rather than being disappointed with a good unit of either.

Actually, I really like Toshiba... I have a Toshiba DVD 16x drive and it seems to be extremely quiet as well as having a low seek time.

Brand means nothing. Confirm the manufacturer and specific model specifications. cdfreaks and cdrinfo are good sources.

I prefer Plextor as well. I heard horror stories about the 24x Liteons back when I was going to buy one... HOWEVER, that is not to say that newer Liteons have the same, if ANY, issues.

i use a 32x lite on burner here at work and hate it.....it burns fine, but with buffer underrun protection enabled, it lags the computer down drastically.....i use a plextor in one computer at home and a yamaha in my main computer at home......both of these seam to handle buffer underrun prevention better....especially the yamaha....i can do pretty much anything on the computer while it is burning without hardly any lag....i'm now a huge yamaha fan.....note* all three of these computers are very similarly powered (athlons ranging from a 950 in the one w/the plextor, to an xp1600+ in the one with the liteon, and an xp 1700+ in the one with the yamaha) i have never used a teac, but if they can't handle buffer underrun protection any better the liteon, then i would stear clear of both.....as far as cdroms go, i have never used either brand

I prefer Lite-Ons also. I haven't run into any bad drives yet. However, numerous of my hallmates that use different brands of drives such as Sony, TDK, etc. all have had their drives break down or consistently make coasters. I have 3 Lite-On drives and no problems so far. Actually, my old Acer drive hasn't failed me yet either. I don't know about Teac specifically because I've never used one or known someone that uses one, but you can't go wrong with a Lite-On drive.

I hope you have DMA enabled on the drive...

:Q

yep....i actually tried both ways to see if it made any difference.....same thing with dma enabled or disabled.....bad buffer underrun prevention handling is the only problem i've ever had with a liteon drive.....cd's come out fine

For burners, TEAC is right up there with Plextor and Ricoh quality--always among the fastest seek times. I think they are worth the extra money. You can buy them OEM (bare drive) and use whatever burning SW floats your boat..
For CD-ROM drives, I would never buy one that is CD-only now. The Artec 16x40 DVD drive is excellent for only $38. including Fedex 2d from Googlegear (see the reviews on Storagereview and either CDRInfo or CDRLabs)--very quiet. If not Artec, I would look at Pioneer or AOpen slot-load (too cool!) for just slightly more.

Quiet and cool That TEAC CD ROM is the best there is...period.
Not that the lite-on wouldn't do fine.
