Teac CDRW 16x10x40 detection problems(bios+ OS)

This Teac was recognized by the bios of my MSI K7 Master motherboard,but after the model# there were strange symbols that shouldn't be there and it was detected by WINDOWS ME as a drive under the drive section in device manager instead of the CDROM section.I then put it in my with my ASUS A7V133 and the bios does not see it,but WINDOWS 98SE does under the drive section of device manager not under CDROM.The drive does not read anything but locks everything up.Could this be a firmware upgrade gone sour?
