so i am looking at the TDK 12/10 deal for this weekend at best buy...

they have the current price at the website as $249 with the $50 rebate
avaiable right there...i guess the only 'sale' aspect for buying it from
the store on the sunday sale would be the $20 instant gift card...not
bad really...maybe buy some cdr/cdrw media....

You seem to be determined to buy the slower drive.
For the sake of speed. You can buy the 12x at outpost with free overnight shipping for $239.95. Then use the $50 rebate. Total...
$189.95. You can probably get the drive for about $10 less from buy.com as they are $219.95 plus shipping...but you will have to wait longer.

Getting back to the TDK Velo CD 16x10x40....is it any good? I want to replace my 8x Yamaha with a 16x but I want to know whether to go with Yamaha, Plextor, or TDK.

Bah, the TDK 12x10x32 is the best... yay we can shave 30 seconds off of a full cd by spending $140 more... no thanks . I love my little 12x10x32 TDK VeloCD for $131 + cd spindle... I got both checks back today (only 2 weeks!).

The TDK 16x one is also 229.99 at fry's, you could always price match it with compusa if you don't feel confident with fry's handling of merchandise.

if you bought it at cost co. put it in the box and take it back.(cash refund) This is cost co. They are the best, stand by everything they sell. Now go get the one you want off the shelf, you get it home don't like return it.

12X - Plex is the best. TDK 12x is a rebadged Plex (there is even a firmware hack to make the drive and other software THINK that the drive is a Plex). TDK has better sofware with it (Nero 5 etc). Buy the TDK if you can get it cheaper than the plex. SOME (but NOT all) of the Iomega ZipCD 12x10x32 drives are also rebadged Plextors.

16X - Plex is the best. Go with the Plex. TDK is a rebadged Sanyo, NOT a Plex. While the Plex drive uses some Sanyo parts, the Plex is NOT a Sanyo drive. Plex makes it. The yamaha is also a good drive, but I would go with the Plex. If you are waiting for the 16X Plex SCSI, you may be waiting a long time, as word has it there will not be one. If you must have SCSI, go with a 12X SCSI Plex.

I bought this one at Costco at 229 and hooked it up with a 166 mhz pentium one with 64 megs and it burned perfect data cds at 14 times (I set it at 16 times) and my former burner could only do non erro Burns consistently at 2x and was a 6x friendly burner.

Now that is a fine performance !!!!!!

Read this Yamaha 16/10/40 Review and you'll think twice about spending a dollar on the Yamaha drive. Both the Plextor and TDK have gotten rave reviews from the same mag. These newer IDE drives have shown to be as reliable and speedy as SCSI. I have a Sony SCSI 8/4/32 that I wish I never would have bought.
