I picked one up today, only because they were made in Japan. I figured they were either MMC's or TY's. I was happy to find they were TYG02's. There were only a few spindles left in the Pleasanton, CA store when I was there.

Yesterday I picked up a 50 pack of GQ "Great Quality" DVD-R 8X at Fry's, City of Industry for $12.50 - $10.00 rebate. The wrapper doesn't say where they were made but $2.50 plus tax on $12.50 plus a stamp I had to try them. Just checked a disk with Nero info tool and it reports TYG02. I don't know what all the hype is about TYG02 is. I have burnt hundreds of DVD's backing up movies and making presentation videos for my wifes business, and everything I have used has worked for me. I have had a few coasters, but nothing excessive or consistant.

So I guess these are worthy of going back for some more, even without the rebate.

GQ have been found to have fake TYG02 codes on them, this has been discussed in some other thread.

Excuse me but what is this "TY" stuff that everyone seems to get so excited about? Who makes TY? What does TY stand for? And how do you know if you've got a TY? Thanks.

TY = Taiyo Yuden. These are supposed to be the best quality DVD recordables out. If not the best, then one of the best.

Is that the brand name or are they rebadged by other makers like Fuji, Sony, TDK, ect.? This is what I'm confused about.

Taiyo Yuden is the actual disc manufacturer's name. they are purchased/relabeled by TDK, Fuji, etc. so you may find the same media (identified by Media Code) under various labels.

edit: look at the link from Sparticus. it gives more detail on this subject.
