I am not trying to be a pain. Other drives I own, they are so obvious because it says model# of other drive mfer on it. Here the drive model# is TDK# AID-840G.

Is the only way of telling with Plextor flash???

I have not read or heard anything other than that the TDK AID-840G is a Plextor. TDK may add something to the firmware but it's basically a rebadged Plextor.

The deal is still alive in B&M (if they have it in stock). I got the last one in Mira Mesa (San Diego). The self tag read $250 but it range up as $200 plus $40 rebate. I didn't have a $30 printable coupon so I had to settle for my $20 off $100 (got the email from Staples a couple days ago); however, I was able to stack my business rewards check and Discover card cash-back check (YMMV). <$100 after rebate and tax. Not bad for a Plextor.

FYI: The new TDK 8x8 AID+880N DVD±R/±RW drive is not a rebadged Plextor it's a rebadged "NEC 2500A" drive and you can get a OEM NEC 2500A drive for about $101 shipped.

Just FYI:
The drive is back in stock at staples. I was on their backorder list and they called me yesterday to verify that I wanted it. In the meantime I had bought the rebadged lite-on on officemax deal so I will cancel the order.

i just called and OOS.. rebate ends the 29th, looks like this deal will be dead in 5 days once the $40.00 MIR expires.
