I got one of these on that deal about a month ago. I love my burner rebadged Plextor TDK. Awesome ripping speeds usually around 6.7-8.0. But it won;t recognize my 1-4X cdrw media.

So this burns DVD-R at 8X also? I see a lot of 8X dual format burners but they only do DVD+R at 8X, and DVD-R at 4X.

I got in on the last deal. Mine mostly works great, but for some reason, it doesn't like the Imation 4x media that I just bought. Nero and dvdinfo says that I can burn the media at 8x, but when I do burn it at 8x, it takes me 40 minutes to burn a dvd. Considering that it takes 22 minutes to burn a disc at 2.4x, that's not good.

Now.. I have a Coolmax firewire/usb external enclosure and that could have everything to do with it. I tried contacting TDK, but they aren't any help. If you aren't using Unez CD Crapper, they won't give you support. Ditto if you're using an external enclosure for an internal drive. I can understand the internal enclosure, but why won't they support you if you don't use their crap packaged software?

Anyway.. My theory is that when I go to burn at 8x, I don't think I'm getting the data to the drive fast enough via the USB 2.0 or firewire port. Because of this, I think it's hitting the buffer underrun and causing it to burn much slower than it would normally if I would've chosen to burn the disc at 2.4x. I still need to experiment with it. I'm going to try and burn a disc at 2.4x and see what happens. I'm also going to pull it from my enclosure and try it hooked up to an IDE channel.

I just wanted to write this because I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem?

Can anyone confirm that there is a current $30 off $150 coupon at Staples? The only one that I found expired on 1/23...

Thanks

Just FYI for those of you that really care. This TDK is the 840 version(as mentioned above). This means it burns/rewrites at +R 8/4 and -R 4/2.

The one that got all the rave reviews is the 880 version. which burns/rewrites at +R 8/4 and -R 8/2.

pooh... I guess I'll have to pass on this one.

Just wanted to tell everyone I also got it about a month ago when they ran this promotion. It's a sweet drive. I'm burning at 8X flawlessly (not one coaster, knock on wood). I am even using Arita 4X media. If anyone has any quesitons about this drive or the media or programs, feel free to PM.

Since this is a rebadged Plextor PX-708A it would depend on how Plextor is going to add 8x DVD-R burning to the Plextor PX-708A drive, hopefully they will follow the lead of Sony and Optorite and also offer a free firmware upgrade to add 8x burning in the coming months. Even if they don't I'm sure somone will come up with a hacked firmware that will add 8x burning to the drive.

The Staples I/O Magic drives are Optorites or BTCs. I got an Optorite DD0401 with firmware 100E. Had to update to 120E to get HD-Burn to work and to write to the sample DVD that came with the drive. Otherwise, it seems to work great. Really like the HD-Burn feature although I'll only be able to read these disks on the Optorite drive.

Works at the B&M if they have them in stock and you can find a printable $30 off $150.

Just got back w/ mine, seems to be exactly as described. Awesome price.

Can't find a printable 30 off 150 anymore. Besides, the kid at Staples said they are getting real picky and actually suing fatwallet, Then again, he thought he knew everything about computers too.
