My CompUSA B&M just called and offered this drive as a substitute for the Iomega. If it is the same drive can I use the same firmware upgrade thats being used for the Iomega?

TDK in substitution for the Iomega? Go for it- the TDK is a nice drive and if it is in fact the Plextor then it's all good. :)

All three drives (Iomega, TDK, Plextor) are outstanding.

I should have searched first, sorry in a rush, from what I can see they are the same and TDK even supplies thier "own" 1.07 firmware. On my way to B&M before this one disappears!
Thanks

I just read recently in a mag (I believe MaxPC) that the Plextor and VeloCD are one and the same. It was in a comparo of CD/RW's. VeloCD took first over the Plextor.

CaptJohn, how'd you get them to do that? Did you order on the net? Or did you place an order in the store or something? I didn't know you could do that. I have TDK velocd right now, and bought an Iomega from the store for my other computer, and another one from the website which is backordered now. I'm wondering if I can get the same exchange?

Yeah, Lizzell is correct. Plextor and TDK are basically the same drives.

I was wondering this same question. I had originally thought you were all correct, but best buy states the TDK as haivng a 4MB buffer, were as the Plextor has a 2MB buffer, how can this be if they are the same drive? Also is the new 16x10x40 TDK a plextor as well?

yes it is the same drive, though if you get the 16x-10x-32x, that is not a plextor, it would be a sanyo
