TCP/IP Port Idenftification problem, PLEASE HELP!

The following is an error message I am getting with Outlook express...

The connection to the server has failed. Account: 'pop.central.cox.net', Server: 'pop.central.cox.net', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10061, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E

I am also getting this (10061 error) with Mozilla and even POP checkers such as this one I use in mIRC. So, pretty much I'm not able to access my mail at all except through the web.

Another problem I am having is that the original icon for an HTML document (associated with IE) will not display. All I get is a default Windows file icon, no matter how many times I try to change it.

These two problems occured after restoring a registry backup so, this is a little surprising to me. I've already been given advice which was "reformat and start clean" but, I'm more than sure there is a better solution than that and if anyone can help me in finding it, I would be greatly appreciative. I really need to get this fixed so, any acknowedgement of my problem is appreciated! Thanks alot! -Dave

You have your mail client configured to use a secure channel (SSL) for POP3, but your mail server doesnt support it.
Go into your mail account properties and clear the check box that says something like "use secure authentication"

no, i don't have SSL enabled. did you see that this doesn't just happen with outlook express but, any mail client? next attempt to help please!

I'm guessing from the cox thing that you're on cable, but my guess is the computer doesn't think its online. Fire up outlook express

Tools>Accounts> Mail Tab> (be sure you only have one item or check them all)>Click item in list> Properties

Go to servers and be sure both boxes reguarding authentication are unchecked, then go to connection and be sure the "always connect using" box is empty (that is my guess).

All else fails remove all entries from the mail tab and re-add them.

i've tried all that and no luck. once again, this doesn't only happen in outlook express. i cant check mail in mozilla, eudora, anything!

Restoring Registry from backup saves a lot of headaches, but create some too.

I would suggest that you should download that current IE, OutlookExp. combo from MS, and reinstall them.

once again, WOW, ITS NOT JUST OUTLOOK EXPRESS! IM HAVING SOME SORT OF TCP/IP PROBLEM IN GENERAL! GEEZ, CAN ANYONE HELP ME?

You might get more help if you werent such a dink about people trying to help but not being on the right track. It happens sometimes. No one owes you an answer, try to be nicer about it.

Yeah shouting at the people that trying to help you will make them happy and more eager to help?

Any way I am probably much older then you, and familiar with the need help and been so desperate (aka the brat syndrome).

Since you did not indicate other problem in your network and Internet surfing, I tend to believe that your problem is not a basic level TCP/IP.

Internet Browser, and Outlook express are interweave one into the other, and have mutual components. The other email programs are using component that are installed in the OS as part of the Internet connectivity.

Refreshing the Browser and Outlook express might correct these components.

It does not take very long, and there is an option to leave your personal setting intact.

If you are using WinXP you have to read on Microsoft site how to reinstall IE/Outlook.

How to Reinstall or Repair Internet Explorer and Outlook Express in Windows XP.

Could be that this will not help, you can always shout again.

well, true. i am sorry you being a "dink". we all know how stressful windows can make us sometimes. in all honestly, i am greatly appreciative to everyone for your help and acknowledgement. thank you very much for your time! -david

What anti virus software are you running?

Norton acts a proxy between you and your isp mail server it fails ALOT i would unitstall your AV software and see if that sorts it, if it does work after that then you could try resintalling your AV but in my experience this wont fix it only a format will.

I work as a sys admin for an isp and if i had a quid for everytime Norton caused this problem id be a rich man (well richer 🙂 )

Hope this helps
