TCP/IP or NetBeui??

Actually I would recommend using both. TCP/IP for your internet connection, and Netbeui for your internal network. Make sure to disconnect the two. This way it will be much harder for hackers to get into your internal network.

For complete details on how to do this, visit:

Both answers apply. You will have to use TCP/IP. That is not a choice. You can use NetBEUI on you LAN for security and TCP/IP for your WAN link.

It just slows things down the more protocols you have installed. You need TCP/IP, you dont need NetBEUI.

True, but on a small home LAN you would never see a realworld performance hit. On the other hand, if you are sharing files on that LAN, binding file sharing to NetBEUI instead of TCP/IP can be a legitimate security benefit. Don't get me wrong, I only use IP myself, but I would not be worried about protocol overhead on a LAN with less than 10 nodes, especially NetBEUI, which has very little overhead to begin with.

I like using them both, TCP/IP for my DSL/Internet, and NetBeui for sharing files, printers.

any reason to use NetBEUI instead of IPX/SPX and vice versa? I was thinking of going with IPX/SPX for my home network simply cause I know at least one piece of software uses it (Diablo), while I know of nothing that uses NetBEUI. just curious...

crapito: Actually IPX is for games only. If you want to play games over the LAN you MUST have IPX installed. However I am not sure if IPX will do File and Printer Sharing... I thought IPX is only for gaming...

hmm... I checked out the link you provided in your earlier post, BCYL. I've been to http://grc.com/ before and like the info. anyway, on the next page, http://grc.com/su-rebinding9x.htm, I found this statement: "If you are currently using networked games over the IPX/SPX transport, or if you plan to in the future, you can ? and probably should ? substitute the IPX/SPX protocol for NetBEUI throughout this entire discussion. You will need IPX/SPX for your gaming and it can be seamlessly substituted for NetBEUI with little impact to your system's security." personally, the only experience I have with IPX/SPX was a quick test using Diablo to see it my home LAN worked; I have no experience with NetBEUI.

aside from games, any other differences between NetBEUI and IPX/SPX protocols?

crapito:
Go with what grc.com says, they are obviously more experienced with networking than I am. As I said in my previous post, I was not sure if IPX can do File and Printer Sharing like Netbeui does. I guess it does... In that case, go with IPX and TCP/IP...

Perhaps you should do a little research before you make comments like this. That was a bit ridiculous.

so now that I am reasonably sure I want IPX/SPX just in case I ever play Diablo on my LAN again...

what is the benefit of NetBEUI over IPX/SPX?

I have not read one reason why anyone would chose NetBEUI except that it is different from TCP/IP and thus can work well to shield your LAN from haX0rz. if that's the only reason, why isn't IPX/SPX mentioned (aside from a "for gamers" afterthought at http://grc.com/su-rebinding9x.htm).

still curious. :)

NetBeui is non-routable, unlike IP or IPX, which can be hacked from outside your network. It is also the small with very low overhead, and the quickest protocol for small LAN's. There's 2.

ktwebb: thanks for the 2 reasons. as I have only 1 reason to use IPX/SPX (Diablo), I think I'll go with NetBEUI for my LAN.

thanks again.

TCP/IP must be used for internet. Terminal Control Protocol/Internet Protocol. Pay attention to the last part...it's important when you're trying to get a web browser to function correctly. Umm....Netbeui is what you use for Microsoft Networking. File and Print sharing. On your LAN. Netbeui is a non-routable protocol so you don't have to worry about anyone from the internet gaining access to your internal LAN as long as you don't have NetBIOS installed and enabled so look out for that configuration and make sure it's disabled. That breaks it down and lets you know what you use for what. You decide what you need. PEACE!

Sorry for jumping into this thread late but I have a question: If I have a Linksys Router/Switch, can I safely bind file and print sharing to TCP/IP? Thanks.

<< crapito: Actually IPX is for games only. >>

That's one of the most ridiculous things I've ever heard. Do you think that Novell designed the IPX/SPX protocol with gaming in mind? IPX is a routable protocol that was designed for NetWare networks. It is true that many of the older games used IPX, but back then, it made lots of sense to use because it's way faster than direct serial or parallel connections. Now, a lot of games support TCP/IP out of the box in order to enable gaming over the Internet.

You really need to do your research in the future, buddy.
