TCP/IP needed to be re-installed, but still doesn't connect to the net

For whatever reason, this system no longer had TCP/IP installed on it. It did before, as I have worked on it before. So, I re-installed TCP/IP, and it still just hangs when trying to connect to the net. It times out.

Any ideas? Could this be an issue that WinSockFix could fix? If so, will the version for XP work on a Win2k system?

I did an ipconfig, and the IP address starts with 65.38 (dial up connection). It acts like it connects, as it shows it is authenticating the username and password, and then it connects. It also shows two computers in the systray. So, what's the deal?

EDIT: It says "Connecting to..." in the status bar of the browser, but it never connects.

Tried WinSockFix. Didn't fix it.

Firstly, what happened to make it stop connecting? Why did you have to reinstall TCP/IP?

Can you ping?

Go into command prompt and type:
ping www.bbc.co.uk

if that times out, try:
ping 212.58.224.86

let us know the results, either way

Start>Run>Type "CMD", OK> (into command prompt) Type "netsh int ip reset test.txt"> recreate if dial up / repair if broadband

if that doesnt work see if you can ping friendly sites, (www.google.com)
if NO
try to ping an IP (216.165.129.157) if you can ping this ip and not a friendly site, then your pc is not connecting to a DNS server.

If you can ping both fine, then it could be a browser issue, firewall issue, or spyware issue.

I tried pinging www.bbc.co.uk and it timed out three times, but replied the 4th time (75% loss). I then tried pinging the IP 212.58.224.86, and it was successful. So, I guess it is not connected to a DNS server. What to do now?

I tried typing in "netsh int ip reset test.txt" in CMD, but it said, "The following comand was not found: int ip reset test.txt"
